The HEVI-Shot 450129 Turkey ProBore 12 Gauge Extended Range 17-4 Stainless Steel Black Made a Bold First Impression
As an outdoor and tactical gear specialist with over a decade in the field, I’ve seen my fair share of shotgun chokes. However, the HEVI-Shot 450129 Turkey ProBore 12 Gauge Extended Range 17-4 Stainless Steel Black immediately caught my eye with its promise of extended range and durable construction. I was seeking a choke tube that would provide consistent patterns at longer distances, improving my turkey hunting success rate.
My need stemmed from a growing frustration with inconsistent patterns using factory chokes, especially when trying to ethically harvest turkeys at the edge of my comfortable range. Upon unboxing, the HEVI-Shot choke exhibited a robust feel, hinting at durability. The black finish appeared both tactical and resistant to the elements, something important for any serious hunter.
Compared to a Carlson’s Long Beard XR Turkey Choke and a Primos Jelly Head Maximum Turkey Choke, the HEVI-Shot stood out due to its advertised compatibility with a wider variety of shotguns. Both the Carlson’s and Primos chokes are excellent, but specific to certain loads, creating limitations I wanted to avoid. Initial impressions were positive; the build quality seemed excellent, and the knurled fore-end suggested ease of use in the field, even with gloved hands.
I was definitely excited to test the HEVI-Shot 450129 Turkey ProBore 12 Gauge Extended Range 17-4 Stainless Steel Black. My biggest hope was that it would deliver on its promise of extended range and tight patterns.

My initial testing of the HEVI-Shot 450129 Turkey ProBore 12 Gauge Extended Range 17-4 Stainless Steel Black took place at a local shooting range. I used a 12-gauge shotgun to pattern various turkey loads at distances ranging from 20 to 50 yards. The weather was slightly overcast, with a mild breeze, providing a relatively controlled environment.
The choke tube installed easily and securely, requiring no specialized tools. I immediately noticed improved pattern density at 40 yards compared to my factory choke. There was no significant change needed to my stance or grip, making the transition seamless.
There were no immediate issues or surprises; the choke performed as advertised right out of the box.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use, including multiple trips to the range and one turkey hunting expedition, the HEVI-Shot choke continues to perform exceptionally well. There are no signs of wear and tear on the choke tube, and the black finish remains intact despite exposure to mud and light rain. Cleaning is straightforward; a quick wipe-down with a bore brush and solvent is all that’s needed.

It has allowed me to confidently take longer shots, knowing that the pattern will hold tight and deliver a lethal payload.
