Pachmayr 500B RIFLE MED BRN/BLK BASE Review

The Pachmayr 500B RIFLE MED BRN/BLK BASE Made a Bold First Impression

The Pachmayr 500B RIFLE MED BRN/BLK BASE is a simple, yet potentially significant upgrade for any rifle owner seeking enhanced comfort and recoil absorption. Marketed as a direct replacement for hard plastic or metal buttplates, this pad from Pachmayr promises a reliable non-slip texture and improved aesthetics. For years I’ve dealt with the discomfort of factory buttplates, and the 500B seemed like an affordable solution.

My trusty .30-06, a rifle I inherited from my grandfather, had a brutal kick thanks to its original, unforgiving buttplate. After a long day at the range, my shoulder would be throbbing. I needed something to tame that beast. I considered limbsaver pads and other recoil reduction systems, but they often added significant length and cost. The Pachmayr 500B was appealing due to its simplicity and affordability, a straightforward solution without unnecessary bells and whistles.

Upon receiving the Pachmayr 500B, my initial impression was positive. The brown and black color combination gives a classic look. The rubber felt firm yet pliable, a clear upgrade from the hard plastic it was intended to replace.

Compared to some higher-end recoil pads, the 500B lacked adjustable features or advanced damping technology. Compared to a simple slip-on recoil pad, the Pachmayr 500B offered a more secure, permanent solution. I chose the Pachmayr because it promised a tailored fit and a more refined appearance.

I was cautiously optimistic. I’ve installed other recoil pads before, some with frustrating results. The true test would be the installation process and, ultimately, the performance at the range.

Real-World Testing: Putting Pachmayr 500B RIFLE MED BRN/BLK BASE to the Test

First Use Experience

My first outing with the Pachmayr 500B installed was at my local outdoor range. It was a typical spring day, slightly damp with a bit of a chill in the air. My primary goal was to re-zero my .30-06 and gauge the felt recoil difference.

Installation was straightforward, requiring only a few basic tools and some patience. I immediately noticed the improved grip and stability when shouldering the rifle. The recoil, while still present, felt noticeably softer and more manageable.

There were no immediate issues after the first shooting session. The pad remained securely attached, and the non-slip texture provided a confident hold, even with slightly damp hands. My shoulder thanked me.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of regular use, the Pachmayr 500B has proven to be a reliable and worthwhile addition to my rifle. I have put around 200 rounds through the rifle since installing the pad. The rubber shows no signs of cracking or significant wear.

Cleaning is simple; a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth is all it takes. The pad continues to provide excellent recoil absorption. It’s superior to the original buttplate by a wide margin.

Compared to my previous experiences with other recoil pads, the Pachmayr 500B has exceeded my expectations. Its simple design and effective performance make it a standout in its price range. The improved comfort translates to increased accuracy and longer, more enjoyable shooting sessions.
