The Model 37 Open Top OC/Mace Holder | Black | Plain Made a Bold First Impression
As an outdoor and tactical gear specialist with over a decade of experience, I’ve seen my fair share of duty belt accessories. When I first laid eyes on the Model 37 Open Top OC/Mace Holder | Black | Plain, from Safariland, I was intrigued by its simplicity and promise of quick access. This isn’t some fancy, over-engineered piece of kit, but a straightforward solution for carrying a vital self-defense tool.
My need for a reliable OC/Mace holder stemmed from an increase in nighttime security patrols in a neighborhood watch program I participate in. I needed a holder that was both secure and readily accessible, offering a decisive advantage in potentially volatile situations. While I’ve used enclosed pouches before, the speed of deployment was always a concern.
Upon receiving the Model 37 Open Top OC/Mace Holder | Black | Plain, I immediately noticed the quality of the SafariLaminate material. It felt sturdy and well-constructed, definitely up to the rigors of daily wear. The plain black finish is professional and unassuming, exactly what I look for in duty gear.
Compared to some universal fit nylon pouches I’ve used, this Safariland holder felt significantly more secure and purpose-built. I chose this over other open-top designs due to Safariland’s reputation for quality and retention. My initial impression was positive – this looked like a piece of gear I could trust my safety to. I was excited to get it on my belt and put it to the test.
Real-World Testing: Putting Model 37 Open Top OC/Mace Holder | Black | Plain to the Test
First Use Experience
My first real-world test of the Model 37 Open Top OC/Mace Holder | Black | Plain was during a neighborhood watch patrol on a particularly damp evening. The light rain and persistent humidity tested both my grip and the holder’s retention. I practiced drawing my OC canister several times, simulating a quick deployment.
Even with slightly slick hands, the canister released smoothly and consistently from the holder. There was no fumbling or hesitation – the open-top design truly delivered on its promise of rapid access. The tension was perfect, holding the canister firmly in place while still allowing for a swift draw.
I was initially concerned that the open top might lead to accidental deployment, especially while navigating through tight spaces. That concern was quickly put to rest; the canister remained secure throughout the patrol. No issues or surprises arose during this first use.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of regular use, the Model 37 Open Top OC/Mace Holder | Black | Plain has proven to be a reliable and durable piece of gear. The SafariLaminate material shows no signs of wear and tear, even after repeated exposure to rain, dust, and the occasional bump against fences and vehicles. The stitching remains intact and strong.
Maintenance is incredibly simple. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth is all it takes to keep the holder clean and functioning optimally. This is a significant advantage compared to some nylon pouches that require more elaborate cleaning and drying procedures.
This Safariland holder outperforms the generic nylon pouches I’ve used in the past. Its superior retention, rapid access, and robust construction make it a clear winner in terms of performance and reliability. It definitely meets my expectations.
