Eotech HWS 522 1x 1 MOA XR308 Reticle Holographic Sight – AA Battery, Unlimited Eye Relief, 30 yds @ 4″ Eye Relief Field of View, 1x Fixed Magnification Review

The Eotech HWS 522 1x 1 MOA XR308 Reticle Holographic Sight – AA Battery, Unlimited Eye Relief, 30 yds @ 4″ Eye Relief Field of View, 1x Fixed Magnification Made a Bold First Impression

The Eotech HWS 522 1x 1 MOA XR308 Reticle Holographic Sight – AA Battery, Unlimited Eye Relief, 30 yds @ 4″ Eye Relief Field of View, 1x Fixed Magnification is not just another optic; it’s a battle-proven holographic weapon sight from Eotech, designed for serious shooters who demand speed and accuracy. This sight is known for its durability, night vision compatibility, and the use of readily available AA batteries. I was looking for an optic that could withstand harsh conditions, offer rapid target acquisition, and wouldn’t leave me stranded with proprietary batteries in the field.

Years ago, I faced a situation during a wild boar hunt where my red dot sight failed due to battery issues, and the replacement battery was nowhere to be found. That experience taught me the importance of a reliable power source, leading me to prioritize AA battery compatibility in my optics ever since. Upon unboxing the Eotech HWS 522, I immediately noticed its robust construction. It felt solid and well-made, with a weight that instilled confidence without being overly cumbersome.

Compared to other holographic sights I’ve used, like the Aimpoint PRO and the Vortex UH-1, the Eotech HWS 522 stood out primarily due to its 1 MOA dot and AA battery compatibility. The Aimpoint PRO is excellent, but lacks the holographic advantage, while the Vortex UH-1 relies on a less common CR123A battery. I chose the Eotech HWS 522 because I wanted a holographic sight, chambered for my .308 platform, with the ability to run on batteries I can find anywhere. My first impression was a mixture of excitement and anticipation.

I was eager to test its performance in real-world scenarios and see if it lived up to Eotech’s reputation. The size felt substantial, but I was optimistic that the benefits of the holographic reticle and AA battery power would outweigh any potential drawbacks. This sight promised reliability and rapid target engagement and I couldn’t wait to get it mounted and zeroed.

Real-World Testing: Putting Eotech HWS 522 1x 1 MOA XR308 Reticle Holographic Sight – AA Battery, Unlimited Eye Relief, 30 yds @ 4″ Eye Relief Field of View, 1x Fixed Magnification to the Test

First Use Experience

I first tested the Eotech HWS 522 at my local shooting range, mounting it on my AR-10 chambered in .308. The weather was slightly overcast, but visibility was good, allowing me to assess the sight’s performance in decent lighting conditions. Mounting was straightforward, fitting snugly onto the MIL-STD-1913 rail.

The initial zeroing process was quick and easy, and I was soon dialing in tight groups at 50 yards. The Eotech’s holographic reticle was crisp and clear, enabling rapid target acquisition and precise shot placement. During this initial test, I ran about 200 rounds through my rifle. I experienced no issues with the sight, and found it intuitive to use.

After a few hours at the range, I noticed that the brightness settings were easy to adjust and suitable for different lighting conditions. One minor surprise was the sight’s battery life indicator, which provided a clear warning when the batteries were getting low.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of consistent use, the Eotech HWS 522 has proven to be a reliable and durable optic. I’ve used it in various conditions, including dusty environments during desert shooting sessions and in light rain during a hog hunt. The sight has held up exceptionally well, showing no signs of wear or damage.

Cleaning and maintenance are simple: a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth keeps the lens clear, and occasional inspection ensures the mount remains secure. Compared to my previous red dot sight, the Eotech’s holographic reticle offers a significant advantage in terms of speed and accuracy. The larger field of view makes target acquisition faster, and the 1 MOA dot allows for precise aiming. The AA battery convenience is also a major plus, eliminating the need to stock up on less common battery types.
