First Thoughts on the Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x 44mm CDS-ZL Side Focus Illuminated FireDot Duplex Reticle Rifle Scope – 3.70″ – 3.82″ Eye Relief, 7.70 – 38.30 ft @ 100 yds Field of View, 3-15x Adjustable Magnification, 13.53″ Length
The Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x 44mm is a premium riflescope designed for versatility and performance across various hunting and shooting disciplines. From its illuminated FireDot Duplex reticle to the CDS-ZL (Custom Dial System – ZeroLock) elevation turret, this scope promises precision and adaptability in a lightweight package. This scope immediately conveys a sense of quality, hinting at the ruggedness and clarity for which Leupold is renowned.
My search for the perfect scope stemmed from needing a reliable optic capable of handling both close-range woodland stalking and long-range precision shots in open country. I required something that could adapt to changing conditions quickly and accurately, without adding unnecessary weight to my rifle. The VX-5HD seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
Upon unboxing, the VX-5HD felt incredibly solid yet surprisingly light. The matte finish exuded quality, and the controls moved with a satisfying smoothness. The side focus adjustment and CDS-ZL turret were particularly impressive, suggesting a high level of precision engineering.
I considered the Vortex Razor HD LH and the Nightforce SHV as alternatives, but ultimately chose the Leupold for its lighter weight and reputation for exceptional glass clarity. The Vortex offered similar features at a slightly lower price point, but the Leupold’s clarity and compact design were key selling points. The Nightforce, while known for its ruggedness, was heavier and perhaps overkill for my specific hunting needs.
My first impression was one of excitement. The VX-5HD appeared to be a well-built, versatile scope with the potential to significantly improve my shooting accuracy and confidence in the field. I couldn’t wait to mount it and put it through its paces.
Real-World Testing: Putting Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x 44mm CDS-ZL Side Focus Illuminated FireDot Duplex Reticle Rifle Scope – 3.70″ – 3.82″ Eye Relief, 7.70 – 38.30 ft @ 100 yds Field of View, 3-15x Adjustable Magnification, 13.53″ Length to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing took place at my local shooting range, as well as a few trips into the backcountry. The VX-5HD was mounted on my .308 bolt-action rifle. I zeroed the scope at 100 yards and experimented with different magnification settings.
The scope performed admirably in varying weather. The fully multi-coated lenses provided excellent clarity even in overcast conditions, and the illuminated FireDot reticle proved invaluable during twilight hours. Setting it up initially was straightforward, and I became very familiar with how to use it.
The ease of use was immediately apparent. The side focus knob allowed for quick and precise parallax adjustment, while the CDS-ZL turret made dialing in elevation for longer shots incredibly simple. The generous eye relief also contributed to a comfortable and consistent shooting experience.
The only minor issue I encountered during my first outing was the windage turret adjustment. Like other users have experienced, the clicks were less pronounced than the elevation turret, making precise adjustments a bit challenging. However, this was a minor inconvenience that didn’t significantly detract from the overall experience.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use, the VX-5HD has proven to be a reliable and durable optic. It has been subjected to various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures, without any noticeable degradation in performance. The optic has held up to all testing.
The scope has shown no signs of wear and tear, even after being bumped and jostled during numerous hunting trips. The scratch-resistant lenses have remained clear and free from blemishes, and the waterproof and fogproof construction has ensured consistent performance in adverse conditions. It’s an extremely solid scope.
Maintaining the VX-5HD has been simple. A quick wipe-down with a lens cloth is usually sufficient to remove any dirt or debris. No special cleaning products have been necessary.
Compared to other scopes I’ve owned, the VX-5HD stands out for its exceptional clarity, versatility, and durability. It outperforms my previous Leupold VX-3i in terms of light transmission and adjustment precision, and it’s significantly lighter than the Nightforce NXS I used to run on my precision rifle. It does outperform everything that I’ve used previously.
