First Thoughts on the Zink Avian X Thunder Fang Mouth Call Attracts Turkey
Turkey hunting is a passion deeply ingrained in my life, spanning over a decade of sunrise wake-up calls and the adrenaline rush of hearing a gobbler respond to my call. Over the years, I’ve experimented with countless mouth calls, each promising to be the key to unlocking the spring woods. I will be examining the Zink Avian X Thunder Fang Mouth Call Attracts Turkey.
I was particularly drawn to the Zink Avian X Thunder Fang Mouth Call Attracts Turkey because of Zink’s reputation for producing quality calls, and the promise of its aggressive cut designed to mimic the raspy sounds of a mature hen. The claim that it’s handcrafted in the USA also piqued my interest, suggesting a level of care and attention to detail often absent in mass-produced calls. At $7.49, it’s an accessible option, making it worth exploring, even if it doesn’t become my primary call.
Upon receiving the Thunder Fang, my first impression was that it felt well-constructed. The reeds appeared to be precisely aligned, and the tape felt secure. Compared to some of the cheaper, mass-produced calls I’ve used, the Thunder Fang seemed to have a higher level of craftsmanship. I’ve previously used Primos calls with similar designs, and while those were decent, the Zink call felt like a step up in terms of perceived quality. I have also tried diaphragm calls from Woodhaven Custom Calls, which are known for their realism. My first impression of the Thunder Fang was one of cautious optimism, eager to see if it could live up to the hype.
Real-World Testing: Putting Zink Avian X Thunder Fang Mouth Call Attracts Turkey to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing ground for the Zink Avian X Thunder Fang Mouth Call Attracts Turkey was a familiar stretch of hardwood forest in central Pennsylvania during the spring gobbler season. The morning air was crisp, with a slight breeze rustling the leaves – perfect conditions for calling. I began with soft yelps, gradually increasing the volume and intensity as I worked my way through different calling sequences. The Thunder Fang required a bit of a learning curve. Initially, it felt a little stiff, and producing consistent, clean sounds was challenging.
However, with practice, I started to find the sweet spot. The call excelled at producing raspy yelps and cutts, just as advertised. I was able to create convincing hen sounds that carried well through the woods. I did encounter a few issues with the call sticking to the roof of my mouth, particularly when it was very dry.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the Zink Avian X Thunder Fang Mouth Call Attracts Turkey has proven to be a reliable addition to my turkey hunting arsenal. It has held up well, showing no significant signs of wear and tear. The reeds have maintained their shape and tension, and the tape remains securely adhered to the frame.
Maintaining the call is relatively simple; I typically rinse it with water after each use and allow it to air dry thoroughly. Compared to some of the more delicate diaphragm calls I’ve used in the past, the Thunder Fang seems to be more robust and forgiving. It outperforms some of the cheaper, mass-produced calls in terms of sound quality and durability. However, it doesn’t quite reach the level of custom-made calls in terms of nuanced sound production.
