What Makes Open Box, Dealer Demo, Leupold VX-5HD 2-10x42mm – 1 out of 3 models Stand Out?
The Open Box, Dealer Demo, Leupold VX-5HD 2-10x42mm – 1 out of 3 models represents a sweet spot in the Leupold lineup, offering a versatile magnification range coupled with their renowned optical clarity and ruggedness. This particular model, even as an open box or dealer demo unit, presents an opportunity to acquire a premium optic at a potentially significant discount. Its CDS-ZL2 elevation dial and FireDot illuminated reticle are features typically found on higher-end scopes, making it appealing to both hunters and tactical shooters.
I needed a scope that was both lightweight and capable of handling a wide range of shooting distances for my multi-purpose rifle. I wanted something with excellent glass for low-light conditions and the ability to quickly adjust for longer shots. My previous scope lacked the precise elevation adjustments I needed for longer-range accuracy, pushing me to look for an upgrade.
My initial impression of the VX-5HD was overwhelmingly positive; even the “open box” unit felt solid and well-built. The adjustments felt precise, and the glass was noticeably clearer than my older scope. The weight was also ideal for my rifle setup.
I considered the Vortex Razor HD LH and the Zeiss Conquest V4, both excellent scopes in their own right. The Leupold, however, won me over with its lighter weight and reputation for exceptional low-light performance, crucial for the type of hunting I do. Plus, the chance to snag a demo unit at a reduced price was too good to pass up.
I was excited! It felt like I was getting a top-tier optic at a mid-range price point. The clarity of the glass, even indoors, was impressive, and I couldn’t wait to get it mounted and zeroed.
Real-World Testing: Putting Open Box, Dealer Demo, Leupold VX-5HD 2-10x42mm – 1 out of 3 models to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the VX-5HD at my local shooting range, zeroing it on my .308 bolt-action rifle. The weather was overcast, providing a good test for its low-light capabilities. I also took it on a short hike to simulate field conditions.
The scope performed admirably in the dim lighting, providing a clear and bright image. Adjusting the elevation using the CDS-ZL2 dial was intuitive and precise. The windage adjustments were equally easy to use, and the pop-up rezero feature was a welcome addition.
The FireDot reticle was easy to see against both light and dark backgrounds, even in the overcast conditions. It only took a few shots to get the scope zeroed at 100 yards, and the adjustments were consistent and repeatable. I did not experience any issues or surprises after the first range session.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, the VX-5HD has proven to be incredibly reliable. I’ve used it in temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and it has consistently held zero. The scope has also been subjected to rain and dust, with no adverse effects on its performance.
Despite being a “demo” unit, there are no significant signs of wear and tear. The finish is still in excellent condition, and the adjustments remain crisp and precise. I wipe down the lenses with a microfiber cloth after each use, and occasionally clean the exterior with a damp cloth.
The VX-5HD outperforms my previous scope in every way. The glass is significantly clearer, the adjustments are more precise, and the CDS-ZL2 system makes dialing in shots at longer ranges a breeze. It has definitely exceeded my expectations.
