First Thoughts on the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body 1/4 Strut Jake Turkey Jake Species Multi Color
Turkey hunting is a game of deception. It requires understanding turkey behavior and presenting a convincing illusion to lure a gobbler into range. Over the years, I’ve cycled through countless decoys, from flimsy folding models to elaborate, taxidermied creations. This constant search for the perfect decoy led me to the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body 1/4 Strut Jake Turkey Jake Species Multi Color. This decoy promises realism and durability in a lightweight package, and after 10+ years in the outdoor gear world, I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype.
I needed a decoy that was easy to carry deep into the woods. Also, it was important that the decoy could withstand the rigors of the hunt, and present a realistic image that would fool even the wariest toms. Upon unboxing, the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body 1/4 Strut Jake Turkey Jake Species Multi Color impressed me with its detailed feathering and compact design.
Compared to some full-strut decoys I’ve used, which can be cumbersome, the 1/4 strut was a welcome change. I chose the Higdon Outdoors decoy over competitors like Avian-X or Flextone because of its hard-body construction and reported durability. My first impression was excitement mixed with cautious optimism; I was ready to put this decoy to the test.
Real-World Testing: Putting Higdon Outdoors Hard Body 1/4 Strut Jake Turkey Jake Species Multi Color to the Test
First Use Experience
My first opportunity to use the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body 1/4 Strut Jake Turkey Jake Species Multi Color came during the spring turkey season in the Ozark Mountains. The setup was simple: a small clearing near a well-used turkey roost. The morning was damp, with a light fog hanging in the air. I staked the Higdon Outdoors jake decoy about 20 yards from my blind, positioning it to appear as if it were casually entering the clearing.
The damp conditions didn’t seem to affect the decoy’s appearance. It held its shape and the colors remained vibrant even with moisture clinging to the surface. Within an hour, a longbeard responded to my calls and cautiously approached the decoy. The gobbler postured, puffed up, and gave the decoy a wide berth, before moving into shooting range. There were no immediate issues, and the hunt was a success.
Extended Use & Reliability
After a full season of use, the Higdon Outdoors Hard Body 1/4 Strut Jake Turkey Jake Species Multi Color has proven its worth. It has been subjected to rain, mud, and the occasional accidental drop. It continues to hold its shape and the paint has shown minimal signs of wear. Cleaning is easy; a simple wipe down with a damp cloth removes any dirt or mud.
Compared to my previous experience with inflatable decoys, which were prone to punctures, the Higdon Outdoors hard body decoy is a significant upgrade. It has outperformed my expectations in terms of durability and realism, and I anticipate it lasting for many seasons to come.
