DeSantis Universal Radio Holder Review

Let’s Dive into DeSantis Universal Radio Holder

In a world saturated with tactical gear, finding reliable and functional equipment is paramount. The DeSantis Universal Radio Holder promises just that: a secure and accessible solution for carrying communication devices. DeSantis, a name synonymous with quality leather goods and innovative holster designs, brings its expertise to this seemingly simple yet crucial piece of gear. This review will delve into the design, performance, and overall value of this radio holder, offering a candid assessment based on years of experience in the field.

My need for a dependable radio holder stemmed from frustrating experiences with flimsy, unreliable options. During search and rescue operations, a securely held and readily accessible radio can be the difference between success and failure. The DeSantis Universal Radio Holder, with its promise of universal fit and robust construction, caught my attention as a potential solution to this persistent problem.

Upon receiving the DeSantis Universal Radio Holder, my initial impression was favorable. The quality of the leather was immediately evident, exhibiting the craftsmanship DeSantis is known for. Its weight felt substantial without being cumbersome, suggesting a durable yet comfortable design. Compared to cheaper nylon alternatives, the DeSantis offering felt like a serious piece of professional gear.

I considered other options, such as the Safariland Universal Radio Holder and the Bianchi Accumold Elite Radio Holder. However, I chose the DeSantis Universal Radio Holder because of its classic leather construction and reputation for durability. While nylon options might offer lighter weight, I prioritize the longevity and professional appearance of leather in my line of work. My first impression was one of cautious optimism; I was eager to put it through its paces and see if it lived up to the DeSantis name.

Real-World Testing: Putting DeSantis Universal Radio Holder to the Test

First Use Experience

My first opportunity to test the DeSantis Universal Radio Holder came during a week-long wilderness navigation and survival course I was instructing. The rugged terrain and unpredictable weather conditions provided an ideal proving ground. It was attached to my duty belt, carrying a Motorola APX 6000XE radio.

The holder performed admirably in various conditions. Even when soaked by rain and caked in mud, the leather retained its shape and grip. The Velcro closure remained secure, preventing the radio from slipping out during rigorous activities like climbing and crawling. The ease of accessing the radio, even with gloved hands, was a major advantage.

There was a minor learning curve involved in adjusting the Velcro closure to perfectly fit the radio. However, once properly adjusted, the fit was snug and secure. My initial surprise was how well the holder conformed to the shape of the radio over time, providing a truly customized fit.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of near-daily use, the DeSantis Universal Radio Holder has proven to be a reliable and durable piece of equipment. The leather shows minimal signs of wear and tear, with only slight scuffing in high-contact areas. The Velcro is still functioning perfectly.

Maintenance has been minimal; a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and grime. I occasionally apply a leather conditioner to keep the leather supple and prevent cracking. Compared to the nylon holders I’ve used in the past, the DeSantis Universal Radio Holder is vastly superior in terms of durability and longevity. It has outperformed my expectations and proven to be a worthwhile investment.
