I was looking for an upper receiver that offered improved ballistics over the standard 5.56 NATO for longer range target shooting and potential hunting applications. The 6.5 Grendel caliber piqued my interest due to its reputation for accuracy and flatter trajectory compared to the 5.56, making it ideal for engaging targets at distances beyond 300 yards. I also needed something that could seamlessly integrate with my existing AR-15 lower receiver.
Upon unboxing, the CMMG RESOLUTE MK4 UPPER GROUP 6.5GREN 16.1 Black immediately impressed with its solid construction. The black Cerakote finish provides a sleek, durable appearance. The weight felt balanced and manageable, and the overall fit and finish seemed top-notch, giving me confidence in its reliability.
I considered upper groups from Brownells and Aero Precision, both offering 6.5 Grendel options. I chose the CMMG due to its inclusion of the ZEROED accessories and the reputation of CMMG for producing high-quality AR-15 components. The overall package seemed more complete and ready to go out of the box.

The upper receiver performed flawlessly right out of the box. There were no failures to feed or eject, and the action cycled smoothly. I quickly zeroed the scope and began shooting groups at 100 yards, achieving sub-MOA accuracy with the Federal Gold Medal ammunition. The ZEROED Muzzle Brake effectively reduced recoil, allowing for faster follow-up shots.

Compared to a previous AR-15 upper I owned chambered in 5.56 NATO, the CMMG RESOLUTE MK4 UPPER GROUP 6.5GREN 16.1 Black offers a significant improvement in accuracy and effective range. The 6.5 Grendel cartridge truly shines at distances beyond 300 yards. It easily outperforms my previous setup.
