First Thoughts on the Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT
Shotguns are my bread and butter. For over a decade, I’ve helped countless hunters and competitive shooters optimize their firearm performance. I was intrigued when the Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT crossed my path, especially given its promise of enhanced skeet shooting.
I’d been searching for a choke tube that could provide consistent, predictable patterns at skeet distances without requiring extensive testing of various loads. Too often, aftermarket chokes promise the world but deliver inconsistent results. I wanted something from a reputable manufacturer with a proven track record. The reputation of Beretta and the OPTIMA choke system piqued my interest.
Unboxing the Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT, my initial impression was of solid, no-nonsense construction. The choke tube felt substantial in hand, with clean machining and a durable finish. It certainly appeared to be a step up in quality compared to some of the cheaper, generic extended choke tubes I’ve encountered.
Compared to a Briley Series 2 extended choke and a Carlson’s Cremator choke, the Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT felt more refined. The Briley offered similar build quality, but at a significantly higher price point. The Carlson’s choke, while functional, lacked the same level of fit and finish, making the Beretta a more appealing option overall. My initial excitement was tempered by a healthy dose of skepticism, eager to see how it performed on the range.
Real-World Testing: Putting Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT was at my local sporting clays range. I focused on skeet stations to evaluate its performance. The weather was typical for early spring – slightly damp with a light breeze.
The difference was immediately noticeable. Clay targets broke with consistent, satisfying impacts. The spread felt even, and I wasn’t seeing the “holes” in the pattern that I sometimes experienced with other skeet chokes. Recoil felt comparable to the factory flush choke.
There were no immediate issues. Installation was straightforward, and the choke tube seated perfectly in my Beretta A400. The extended design made it easy to tighten and remove by hand.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT continues to impress. It remains my go-to choke for skeet. The choke has maintained its integrity even after repeated cleanings and exposure to the elements.
There are no signs of wear or tear beyond normal carbon buildup. Cleaning is simple, requiring only a choke tube wrench (for initial removal), solvent, and a nylon brush. It’s far easier to maintain than some ported chokes I’ve used in the past.
The Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT has exceeded my expectations, delivering consistent patterns and reliable performance. Compared to my previous experiences with aftermarket chokes, this one stands out for its consistent performance and ease of use. It’s quickly become an indispensable part of my skeet setup.
Breaking Down the Features of Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT
Specifications
The Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT is an extended choke tube designed for 12-gauge shotguns utilizing the Beretta Optima-Choke HP system. It extends approximately 1 inch beyond the end of the barrel. This provides a longer constriction taper for improved patterns.
The choke tube is specifically designed for skeet shooting. It delivers a wide, even spread ideal for close-range targets. The Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT is constructed from high-quality steel and features a durable finish.
Performance & Functionality
The Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT excels at its intended purpose: breaking skeet targets. The patterns are consistently wide and even, providing a greater margin of error on close-range shots. This choke tube enhances the confidence in breaking targets.
The choke’s greatest strength lies in its consistent pattern density. However, its fixed constriction limits its versatility compared to adjustable chokes. It meets and exceeds expectations for skeet shooting but isn’t suitable for other disciplines requiring tighter patterns.
Design & Ergonomics
The Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT features a simple, functional design. Its extended length allows for easy hand tightening and removal, eliminating the need for tools in most situations. The construction is robust, and the finish appears to be resistant to corrosion and wear.
The choke is user-friendly with no learning curve. Simply screw it in and you are ready to shoot. It is comfortable in the sense that it doesn’t add significant weight or negatively impact the shotgun’s balance.
Durability & Maintenance
The Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT is built to last. The quality steel construction and durable finish suggest it will withstand years of use. Regular cleaning is all that’s required to keep it in top condition.
Maintenance is straightforward. A quick scrub with solvent and a choke tube brush after each shooting session is all that’s needed.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Beretta OPTIMA CT 12 SKU EXT does not come with any additional accessories. The key “accessory” is a choke tube wrench, though its extended design makes it unnecessary in most cases. It is compatible with any 12-gauge Beretta shotgun that utilizes the Optima-Choke HP system.
There are no direct customization options for the choke itself, though shooters can experiment with different brands and types of shotgun shells to fine-tune their patterns.
