First Impressions of Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks
The Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks promise a compact and efficient climbing solution for hunters, and I was eager to see if they lived up to the hype. These sticks, new for 2024 from Novix, boast flared, welded 9″ aluminum steps and a frost coating for superior grip and concealment. My initial interest stemmed from a desire for a lighter, more maneuverable climbing system compared to my existing, bulkier setup.
I’ve been using heavier, single-step climbing sticks for years and found myself increasingly frustrated with their weight and the limited foot room they offered. The Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks seemed like the perfect solution to address these issues, offering a more compact and versatile climbing experience. They also offered a better price point than some of the custom carbon fiber options on the market.
Unboxing the Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks, I was immediately impressed by their compact size and lightweight feel. The aluminum construction felt solid, and the frost coating gave them a nice, tactile grip. The 9″ double steps appeared adequately sized, and the V-bracket design looked robust and promising. I was excited to get these sticks into the field.
Compared to my existing Lone Wolf climbing sticks, the Novix sticks are noticeably shorter and lighter. The double steps are a welcome addition, offering more foot placement options than the single-step design of the Lone Wolf sticks. I chose the Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks over similar options from Hawk or Muddy because of the reported reliability of Novix products and the overall design of the V-bracket.
My first impression was positive. The Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks felt well-made and thoughtfully designed. I was definitely excited to try them out in a real hunting scenario and see if they could truly improve my climbing experience.
Real-World Testing: Putting Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks was during an early-season scouting trip in the hardwoods of southern Ohio. The weather was dry, with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. I used the sticks to access a potential treestand location roughly 12 feet off the ground.
The Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks proved surprisingly easy to use right out of the box. The pivoting V-bracket bit into the tree bark securely, and the double steps provided ample foot room for a stable climb. The buckle strap system made attaching the sticks to the tree quick and efficient.
After only a few minutes of climbing, I appreciated the stability and enhanced foot room provided by the double steps. There were no immediate issues, although I did notice the sticks seemed a little short. I also wished the straps were a bit longer to accommodate larger diameter trees.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use throughout the hunting season, the Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks have held up remarkably well. Despite repeated use in varying conditions, including rain and light snow, they still perform as expected. The Frost Coating has provided a noticeable grip enhancement, especially in wet conditions.
The sticks have shown minimal signs of wear and tear, with only minor scratches to the finish. Cleaning is straightforward, requiring just a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth. I have not had any issues with the V-bracket or the buckle straps failing.
Compared to my older climbing sticks, the Novix Mini Double-Step Sticks offer a significant improvement in both weight and packability. However, the shorter length requires using more sticks to reach the same height. I now feel I can move quietly and efficiently through the woods, making for a more stealthy setup.
