First Impressions of Novix Double-Step Sticks
The Novix Double-Step Sticks are the new kids on the block for 2024, promising a more comfortable and secure climbing experience for hunters and outdoorsmen alike. Made by Novix, these sticks aim to address a common complaint with single-step designs: limited foot room. With their flared, 9-inch, welded aluminum steps and frost coating, they look like they could be a game-changer for those of us who spend hours in a tree stand.
I was perpetually searching for a climbing system that offered both stability and reduced foot fatigue during long sits. Single-step sticks always left my feet cramped and uncomfortable. I was hoping for something that would make me feel more secure on the way up and provide a solid platform while waiting for that elusive buck.
Upon unboxing, the Novix Double-Step Sticks felt surprisingly lightweight considering their construction. The aluminum steps are robust, and the frost coating gives them a nice tactile feel. The V-bracket system looks intelligently designed. I was definitely excited to see how they performed in the field.
Compared to my old Muddy Pro Sticks, these appear to offer a significant upgrade in foot room and stability. I also considered the Hawk Helium sticks for their lighter weight, but I ultimately chose the Novix Double-Step Sticks because of the double-step design, which I felt would offer a more secure and comfortable climbing experience. My first impression was one of cautious optimism – the design shows promise, but the real test would be in the woods.
Real-World Testing: Putting Novix Double-Step Sticks to the Test
First Use Experience
I put the Novix Double-Step Sticks to their first test during a pre-season scouting trip in the Appalachian foothills. The terrain was steep and the trees varied in size and shape. I wanted to assess their performance on both oak and poplar trees.
The sticks performed admirably in both dry and slightly damp conditions. The Novix V-bracket system bit into the bark effectively, providing a stable and silent platform. I did notice a slight learning curve when initially adjusting the pivoting bracket to ensure a level step on uneven trees, but after a couple of climbs, it became second nature.
The biggest surprise was the improved comfort of the double-step design. Having ample foot room made a huge difference in reducing fatigue during the climb and while hanging the stand. I felt far more stable and confident than when using my old single-step sticks.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use during the early archery season, the Novix Double-Step Sticks have proven to be a reliable and valuable addition to my hunting gear. There were multiple hunts in varying conditions. From dry crisp mornings to drizzly afternoons, they held up beautifully.
Despite repeated use, there are minimal signs of wear and tear. The frost coating is holding up well. There’s no noticeable peeling or scratching. The aluminum V-brackets still grip securely.
Maintenance is straightforward. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth after each use is all it takes to keep them clean. These sticks far outperform my previous climbing system. The stability and comfort they provide are unmatched in my experience.
