Let’s Dive into Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Foliage Green, Left Hand 6005-5340-542
The Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Foliage Green, Left Hand 6005-5340-542 is more than just a holster; it’s a complete weapon retention and carry system designed for the demands of tactical operations. Safariland, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in law enforcement and military equipment, has once again delivered a product that promises security, accessibility, and adaptability. This particular model, tailored for left-handed shooters and finished in STX Foliage Green, is engineered for compatibility with railed 1911 platforms equipped with weapon lights, making it a specialized tool for those who require a secure and readily available sidearm.
For years, I relied on a generic nylon holster for my duty weapon during search and rescue operations. It was uncomfortable, insecure, and frankly, unprofessional. I needed a holster that offered superior retention, a comfortable and stable carry platform, and a professional appearance – the Safariland 6005 seemed to tick all the boxes.
My first impression of the Safariland 6005 was formed as soon as I unboxed it. The STX Foliage Green finish offered a subdued and tactical look, while the robust construction immediately instilled confidence. It felt like a serious piece of kit, designed to withstand serious use.
Compared to other drop-leg holsters I’ve used – including offerings from Blackhawk and Uncle Mike’s – the Safariland 6005 felt far more refined. Those other holsters often felt bulky and lacked the positive retention I craved. The Safariland felt like a professional grade tool, not a cheap imitation. I was excited to put it to the test.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Foliage Green, Left Hand 6005-5340-542 to the Test
First Use Experience
I initially tested the Safariland 6005 at my local shooting range, focusing on draw speed and weapon retention. The weather was typically unpredictable for the area, featuring light rain and gusty winds. The SLS (Self Locking System) hood proved to be intuitive and easy to disengage, even with wet and gloved hands.
The draw stroke was smooth and consistent, providing rapid access to my weapon without compromising security. The quick-release leg harness kept the holster firmly in place, even during dynamic movements. There were no unpleasant surprises, just smooth performance and secure retention.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use during training exercises and security details, the Safariland 6005 has proven to be exceptionally durable. The SAFARILAMINATE construction has shown no signs of wear or tear, even after repeated exposure to abrasive surfaces and inclement weather. It easily shrugged off mud, dust, and rain.
Cleaning and maintenance are straightforward; a quick wipe down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove any dirt or grime. Compared to my previous nylon holster, which required frequent cleaning and often retained moisture, the Safariland 6005 is a breeze to maintain. It has significantly outperformed my expectations, providing a level of security and reliability that I previously thought unattainable.

The Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Foliage Green, Left Hand 6005-5340-542 boasts several key specifications that contribute to its outstanding performance. It’s designed to fit railed 1911s (Kimber, Springfield Armory, STI/SVI, Wilson) equipped with Surefire X200 or X300 weapon lights. This holster is specifically molded for left-handed users.
The holster features Safariland’s renowned SLS (Self Locking System), a rotating hood that provides a secure level of retention while allowing for a smooth, single-motion draw. It is constructed from durable SAFARILAMINATE material, which offers excellent protection against the elements and abrasion. The leg harness includes a quick-release buckle for rapid removal and features double leg straps for enhanced stability.
Performance & Functionality
The Safariland 6005 performs its primary function – secure weapon retention and rapid access – exceptionally well. The SLS system provides a high degree of security against unauthorized weapon removal, while still allowing for a fast and efficient draw. The leg harness keeps the holster stable and comfortable, even during extended periods of wear or strenuous activity.
The only weakness I’ve encountered is that the holster will not retain the weapon without the weapon light attached. This isn’t necessarily a flaw, as the holster is designed specifically for use with a light, but it’s important to be aware of this limitation. Overall, the Safariland 6005 has exceeded my expectations in terms of performance and functionality.
Design & Ergonomics
The Safariland 6005 is designed with the user in mind, prioritizing both functionality and comfort. The SAFARILAMINATE construction is lightweight yet durable, and the leg harness is adjustable to accommodate a wide range of body types. The STX finish provides a professional and low-profile appearance.
The holster is relatively user-friendly, although some practice may be required to master the SLS system and achieve a consistently smooth draw. The intuitive design minimizes the learning curve.
Durability & Maintenance
The Safariland 6005 is built to last, with its robust construction and high-quality materials. The SAFARILAMINATE material is highly resistant to abrasion, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Maintenance is simple, requiring only occasional cleaning with a damp cloth.
With proper care, this holster should provide years of reliable service. Safariland has a reputation for producing durable and long-lasting products.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Safariland 6005 comes standard with the quick-release leg harness. While it’s primarily designed for use with railed 1911s and Surefire X200/X300 weapon lights, the mounting holes on the leg shroud allow for the attachment of other accessories, such as magazine pouches or medical kits.
