The SLS (Self Locking System) rotating hood and the quick-release leg harness are standout features, designed for rapid deployment and unparalleled retention.
After a particularly harrowing training exercise where my previous holster failed to provide adequate retention, I needed a serious upgrade. I was specifically looking for a holster that could withstand the rigors of tactical environments while offering a secure and easily accessible platform for my sidearm. I was drawn to the Safariland 6005 for its reputation and robust design.
Upon unboxing, the Safariland 6005 felt substantial and well-made. The OD Green SAFARILAMINATE material exudes durability, and the stitching is clean and precise. The weight felt balanced, and the quick-release buckles on the leg harness inspired confidence.
I considered the Blackhawk! Serpa Level 3 Tactical Holster and the Blade-Tech WRS Level II Duty Holster, both reputable options. However, I chose the Safariland 6005 because of its superior retention system and the overall positive reviews from professionals in the field. The SLS felt more secure and intuitive than the retention mechanisms of the other holsters I considered.
My initial impression was one of excitement mixed with a healthy dose of respect. This wasn’t some flimsy, off-the-shelf piece of kit. The Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster felt like a professional-grade tool ready for serious work.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – OD Green, Right Hand 6005-376-561 to the Test
First Use Experience
My first experience with the Safariland 6005 was at a demanding shooting range training session focused on rapid deployment and weapon retention drills. The range provided varied scenarios, including close-quarters combat simulations and movement under duress. I immediately appreciated the secure feel of the holster and the smooth draw provided by the SLS system.
The holster performed admirably in both dry and dusty conditions. The retention remained firm, even during vigorous movement, and the quick-release leg harness provided a comfortable and stable platform. I found the draw stroke intuitive after only a few practice repetitions.
The learning curve was surprisingly minimal. The SLS system requires a specific motion to disengage, but it quickly became second nature. I did need to adjust the leg straps for optimal comfort and stability, which was easily done with the adjustable buckles.
The only initial issue was a slight stiffness in the SLS hood rotation. However, after a few dozen draws, it smoothed out significantly. The initial break-in period was minimal, and the overall performance was impressive right out of the box.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use in various training scenarios, including simulated patrol duties and force-on-force exercises, the Safariland 6005 has proven to be exceptionally reliable. It has consistently performed flawlessly, even under heavy use. The holster has become an indispensable part of my gear.
The SAFARILAMINATE construction has held up remarkably well, showing only minor scuff marks despite regular contact with abrasive surfaces. The stitching remains intact, and the hardware is still secure. The durability of the holster is impressive.
Maintenance is straightforward; a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and grime. I occasionally apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the SLS mechanism to ensure smooth operation. The holster requires minimal maintenance to maintain peak performance.
Compared to my previous nylon holster, the Safariland 6005 is a significant upgrade in terms of security, durability, and overall performance. It far exceeds my expectations. The enhanced retention and comfortable carry make it a superior choice.
