Mec-Gar TAURUS PT92/99 18 Round 9mm Luger Magazine Review

First Impressions of Mec-Gar TAURUS PT92/99 18 Round 9mm Luger Magazine

The Mec-Gar TAURUS PT92/99 18 Round 9mm Luger Magazine promises enhanced capacity and reliability for the venerable Taurus PT92/99 series. As someone deeply familiar with the platform and always on the lookout for improvements, I was eager to see how this magazine stacked up against the factory offerings. My initial interest stemmed from a desire to increase my PT92’s round count without sacrificing reliability, a common issue with aftermarket magazines.

I’ve always found factory Taurus magazines to be reliable, but their 15-round capacity felt a bit limiting. I needed magazines that could hold more rounds, especially for range training and practical shooting scenarios. When I first handled the Mec-Gar TAURUS PT92/99 18 Round 9mm Luger Magazine, I was immediately impressed by its solid construction. The blued finish looked durable, and the high-impact polymer follower felt like a significant upgrade over some of the cheaper alternatives I’ve encountered.

Compared to ProMag’s offerings, which I’ve found can be hit-or-miss, the Mec-Gar felt like a step up in quality. Similarly, while factory Taurus magazines are reliable, the Mec-Gar offered a higher capacity at a comparable price point. My initial excitement was high; the magazine felt well-made and promised a tangible improvement to my PT92’s capabilities. I was genuinely excited to get it to the range and see how it performed under real-world conditions.

Real-World Testing: Putting Mec-Gar TAURUS PT92/99 18 Round 9mm Luger Magazine to the Test

First Use Experience

I first tested the Mec-Gar TAURUS PT92/99 18 Round 9mm Luger Magazine at my local shooting range during a day dedicated to pistol drills. The weather was typical for a Texas summer – hot and humid. I ran several magazines through my PT92, focusing on rapid-fire drills and reload exercises.

The magazine performed flawlessly during that initial range session. Loading was smooth, and the magazine seated positively every time. There were no failures to feed or any other malfunctions. I did notice that the magazine was initially a little stiff to insert when fully loaded, but this eased up after a few cycles.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of use, the Mec-Gar TAURUS PT92/99 18 Round 9mm Luger Magazine has proven to be remarkably reliable. I’ve put hundreds of rounds through it, using a variety of 9mm ammunition from different manufacturers. The magazine shows minimal signs of wear and tear, and the anti-friction coating is still slick.

Cleaning and maintenance are straightforward. I simply wipe down the magazine body and follower after each range session and occasionally disassemble it for a more thorough cleaning. Compared to some of the generic magazines I’ve used in the past, the Mec-Gar has far surpassed my expectations in terms of durability and consistent performance. It consistently outperforms cheaper alternatives, and the increased capacity makes it a worthwhile upgrade.
