Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear FN OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster Review

First Impressions of Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear FN OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster

The Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear FN OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster promises a blend of speed, security, and adaptability for FN Herstal pistol owners. The holster is designed for both open and concealed carry, featuring a quick-release system and adjustable cant. The paddle attachment also ensures comfortable and secure carry.

As an outdoor and tactical gear specialist, I’m always on the hunt for reliable holsters. I was specifically looking for a durable, outside-the-waistband (OWB) holster that could accommodate my FN pistol while offering quick access and comfortable carry. The Black Scorpion seemed to tick all the boxes.

Upon unboxing, I was immediately impressed by the solid feel of the Black Scorpion. The .08″ Kydex felt rigid and well-formed, promising good retention and durability. The quick-release mechanism operated smoothly, and the paddle attachment felt sturdy.

I compared it with a Safariland ALS holster and a Blade-Tech OWB holster. The Safariland offered superior active retention, but at a higher price point and with a more complex draw. The Blade-Tech was slimmer, but lacked the Black Scorpion’s quick-release feature. Ultimately, I chose the Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear FN OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster for its balance of features and price.

I was initially excited but slightly skeptical. Kydex holsters can sometimes feel cheap or uncomfortable, but the Black Scorpion felt like a quality product. Now, it’s time to see if it holds up in real-world conditions.

Real-World Testing: Putting Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear FN OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster to the Test

First Use Experience

My first test was at an outdoor shooting range. The weather was warm and sunny, ideal for putting the Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear FN OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster through its paces. I ran several drills focusing on drawing and re-holstering my FN pistol, assessing the holster’s speed and security.

The draw was surprisingly fast and smooth, thanks to the optimized competition cut. Re-holstering was equally straightforward, with the Kydex providing a secure “click” to confirm the firearm was locked in place. The holster felt comfortable against my body, even during rapid movements.

Initially, the paddle was a little tight, but after a few adjustments, it conformed nicely to my waist. There were no major issues, though I noticed the quick-release lever required deliberate pressure to activate, which is a positive from a safety perspective.

Extended Use & Reliability

After three months of consistent use, the Black Scorpion Outdoor Gear FN OWB Quick Release Paddle Holster has proven to be remarkably durable. I’ve used it during multiple range sessions, a weekend-long outdoor training course, and even while hiking. The Kydex shows minimal signs of wear and tear.

The finish hasn’t scratched or faded, and the quick-release mechanism still works as smoothly as it did on day one. I’ve carried in both dry and humid conditions, and the holster shows no signs of rust or corrosion. Cleaning is simple – just wipe it down with a damp cloth.

Compared to other Kydex holsters I’ve used, the Black Scorpion stands out for its robust construction and secure retention. I previously used a cheaper brand that quickly developed cracks and lost its shape, but the Black Scorpion has held up exceptionally well. It definitely outperforms my expectations.
