First Impressions of Novix Mini Double Step Sticks
The Novix Mini Double Step Sticks represent a calculated gamble on accessibility and packability in the world of treestand hunting. Marketed as a compact alternative to traditional climbing sticks, they promise ease of transport and setup without sacrificing too much in the way of height or stability. These 17-inch sticks, manufactured by Novix, cater to the mobile hunter who values a minimalist approach and quick setups.
I was initially drawn to the Novix Mini Double Step Sticks because I was looking for a lighter, less cumbersome climbing solution for my run-and-gun whitetail hunts. My traditional longer sticks were effective, but their weight and length made long treks through thick cover exhausting. I needed something easier to carry and quicker to deploy, even if it meant sacrificing a little height.
Unboxing revealed a set of four sticks with a straightforward design. The extruded aluminum construction felt solid, and the Novix Frost Coating gave them a muted, non-reflective finish. The double-step design seemed practical, offering ample foot placement, and the V-bracket looked like it would provide a secure bite on the tree.
Compared to my Hawk Helium sticks and Muddy Pro Sticks, the Novix Mini Double Step Sticks are noticeably shorter and lighter. I chose the Novix due to their double-step design, which I believed would offer more stability, and their reputation for a secure tree grip. While the others offered slightly more height per stick, I prioritized packability and the promise of a faster, quieter setup.
My first impression was cautiously optimistic. The Novix Mini Double Step Sticks seemed well-built and designed with the mobile hunter in mind. However, the real test would be in the field, assessing their stability, ease of use, and overall effectiveness in getting me safely into a tree.
Real-World Testing: Putting Novix Mini Double Step Sticks to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the Novix Mini Double Step Sticks was on a pre-season scouting trip in some heavily pressured public land. I targeted a thick bedding area where I suspected a mature buck might be holding up. The terrain was hilly and covered in dense underbrush, making a quiet and efficient setup crucial.
The conditions were typical for early fall: damp ground with morning dew and temperatures hovering around 50 degrees. Setting up the sticks proved relatively easy. The V-bracket design indeed bit securely into the tree bark, and the pivoting feature allowed me to maintain a level platform even on slightly angled trees.
I did, however, immediately notice the limited height gained with each stick. It took more sticks than I was used to in order to reach my desired height of around 15 feet. Furthermore, the shorter length of the sticks made the transition from one stick to the next feel a little more precarious than with my longer sticks.
Extended Use & Reliability
After a full season of using the Novix Mini Double Step Sticks, I have a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. They’ve held up remarkably well. The aluminum construction shows no signs of bending or fatigue, and the Novix Frost Coating has resisted scratching and chipping.
Maintenance has been minimal. A quick wipe-down after each hunt is all it takes to keep them clean and functioning smoothly. The buckle strap holding the sticks together has also proven durable, showing no signs of wear.
Compared to my previous experience with longer, heavier sticks, the Novix Mini Double Step Sticks offer a significant improvement in packability and weight savings. However, the trade-off in height per stick is noticeable. I find myself using more sticks to reach the same height. While setup is quicker, the shorter distance between steps can feel less secure, especially when wearing bulky hunting boots and clothing.
Breaking Down the Features of Novix Mini Double Step Sticks
Specifications
- The Novix Mini Double Step Sticks are 17 inches in length. This compact size is intended for easy transport and maneuverability.
- Each stick is 4.5 inches wide, providing a comfortable platform for your feet. The width contributes to a more stable climbing experience.
- The sticks are constructed from extruded aluminum. This material offers a good balance of strength and lightweight properties.
- They are designed to be unisex, accommodating a wide range of users. The universal design ensures accessibility for most hunters.
Performance & Functionality
The Novix Mini Double Step Sticks perform admirably for their intended purpose: providing a lightweight and portable climbing solution. Their accuracy in achieving the desired climbing height is dependent on the number of sticks used. More sticks are required than with longer models.
The strength lies in their portability and quick setup. However, the limited height per stick and slightly less forgiving transition between steps are weaknesses. I find they meet expectations for mobility but fall slightly short in terms of overall climbing ease compared to longer sticks.
Design & Ergonomics
The build quality is excellent. The aluminum feels sturdy, and the Novix Frost Coating provides a non-slip surface and reduces noise. The weight is manageable.
The design is relatively user-friendly, although it takes some practice to get used to the shorter step distance. The pivoting V-bracket is a standout feature, allowing for secure attachment to trees of varying shapes and sizes.
Durability & Maintenance
The aluminum construction and robust design suggest a long lifespan. There is no visible wear and tear after a full season of use.
Maintenance is simple, requiring only occasional cleaning with a damp cloth. The sticks appear to be built to withstand the rigors of hunting in various weather conditions.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Novix Mini Double Step Sticks do not come with a wide range of accessories. They primarily focus on the core functionality of climbing.
However, aftermarket modifications are possible. Hunters can add padding to the steps for increased comfort or use different straps for securing the sticks to the tree. The sticks are compatible with most standard climbing stick accessories.

Who Should Buy Novix Mini Double Step Sticks?
The Novix Mini Double Step Sticks are perfect for mobile deer hunters, run-and-gun turkey hunters, and anyone who prioritizes lightweight gear and quick setups. They are also suitable for hunters who primarily hunt on smaller properties or in areas where long treks are necessary.
Those who should skip this product include hunters who prioritize maximum height and stability above all else, or those who have physical limitations that make shorter, more frequent steps challenging. Hunters who frequently hunt from treestands at significant heights might find the shorter sticks less confidence-inspiring.
A must-have modification would be adding padding to the steps for increased comfort during long sits. Also, consider upgrading the straps for even quicker and more secure attachment.
Conclusion on Novix Mini Double Step Sticks
The Novix Mini Double Step Sticks are a solid choice for the mobile hunter seeking a lightweight and packable climbing solution. While they require more sticks to reach the same height as longer models and the shorter step distance may take some getting used to, their durability, ease of setup, and secure tree grip are undeniable assets. The Novix Mini Double Step Sticks are a good choice for hunters who value a light and easy setup that sacrifices some height for the ability to go virtually anywhere.
The price is justified for the quality of materials and construction. I would personally recommend them to anyone who fits the profile of the mobile hunter described above. If you’re tired of lugging around heavy, cumbersome climbing sticks and are willing to trade a bit of climbing ease for increased portability, give the Novix Mini Double Step Sticks a try.
