With its tanto blade, ball bearing pivot system, and textured G10 handle, this knife aims to be a versatile companion for daily tasks and unexpected challenges.
As a seasoned outdoorsman and tactical gear specialist, I’m always on the lookout for dependable tools. I needed a robust EDC knife that could handle everything from opening packages to more demanding tasks on the trail. The Remington offering caught my eye with its aggressive tanto blade and promise of easy, one-handed operation.
Unboxing the Remington EDC Linerlock Tanto 5in Folding Blade, my initial impression was one of solid construction. The weight felt good in my hand, suggesting a durable build, and the G10 handle provided a reassuringly grippy texture. It felt significantly different from the lighter, flimsier knives I’ve handled in the past.
I considered the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert, known for its tactical pedigree, and the Spyderco Paramilitary 2, a favorite among EDC enthusiasts. However, the Remington’s tanto blade and reversible pocket clip swayed me, promising a blend of practicality and versatility that aligned with my needs. I hoped the Remington would prove to be a capable and durable alternative.
Initially, I was cautiously optimistic. The Remington EDC Linerlock Tanto 5in Folding Blade presented itself as a well-built and potentially versatile tool, but only real-world testing would reveal its true capabilities. It had the potential to be a valuable addition to my EDC rotation.
Real-World Testing: Putting Remington EDC Linerlock Tanto 5in Folding Blade to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the Remington EDC Linerlock Tanto 5in Folding Blade was a weekend camping trip in the Allegheny National Forest. I wanted to test its mettle in a variety of tasks, from preparing food to processing small pieces of wood for kindling. The forest provided a good range of environments for testing.
The knife performed admirably in dry conditions, making quick work of slicing rope and feathering sticks. However, when the rain started, the G10 handle truly shined, providing a secure grip even with wet hands. The ball bearing pivot system made opening the blade a breeze, even with gloves on.
I initially struggled slightly with the liner lock, finding it a bit stiff to disengage. This was a minor inconvenience, but I quickly adapted to it after a few uses. The blade held its edge well, requiring only a quick strop at the end of the day.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Remington EDC Linerlock Tanto 5in Folding Blade has proven to be a reliable companion. It has seen action on numerous hikes, fishing trips, and even some light-duty tasks around the house. The blade remains sharp and strong.
The finish on the stainless steel blade has held up remarkably well, showing only minor scratches from use. The G10 handle still looks and feels as good as new, demonstrating its resistance to wear and tear. I’ve been impressed with its long-term durability.
Maintaining the knife is simple: a quick wash with soap and water after use, followed by a light coat of oil on the blade and pivot point. The liner lock has loosened up slightly over time, making it easier to operate, but it still locks securely. Overall, the Remington has exceeded my expectations for a knife in this price range, proving to be a dependable and durable tool for everyday carry.
