Frabill Power Extend Review

First Impressions of Frabill Power Extend

The Frabill Power Extend, a landing net engineered with a focus on fish conservation and ease of use, immediately caught my eye. Frabill promises a revolutionary handled yoke system and a push-button extendable handle, features that could genuinely enhance the angling experience, especially when targeting larger fish.

As an outdoor gear specialist with over a decade of experience, I’m always on the lookout for tools that improve efficiency and minimize impact on the environment. My usual landing net lacks the reach needed for some situations, particularly when fishing from a high bank or a boat with a substantial freeboard. The Frabill Power Extend addresses this problem with its extendable handle, potentially making landing fish easier and safer for both the angler and the catch.

Upon unboxing, the build quality felt robust, if a little heavier than I anticipated. The conservation netting looks gentle on the fish, and the reflective hoop is a smart addition for low-light conditions. Compared to my existing, basic aluminum-framed net and a friend’s collapsible net, the Frabill Power Extend seems to offer a significant upgrade in terms of functionality and fish care.

My initial reaction was cautiously optimistic. While the weight was a minor concern, the features and build quality seemed promising. I was eager to put it through its paces on the water.

Real-World Testing: Putting Frabill Power Extend to the Test

First Use Experience

My first outing with the Frabill Power Extend was on the local river, targeting trout and smallmouth bass. I used it both wading and from my kayak. The varying conditions gave me a good initial sense of its performance.

The extendable handle proved invaluable when landing a feisty smallmouth from the kayak; I could easily reach the fish without leaning precariously over the side. The asymmetrical, flat-bottomed net shape also seemed to cradle the fish well, minimizing stress during the landing process. However, I found the weight of the net becoming noticeable after several hours of use, especially when wading and constantly maneuvering the net.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of regular use, the Frabill Power Extend has proven to be a reliable tool. The extension mechanism continues to function smoothly, and the net has shown no signs of tearing or fraying, even after landing several larger bass and a surprisingly heavy catfish.

Despite being stored mostly in my garage, which isn’t climate controlled, there are no apparent signs of rust or corrosion. Cleaning the net is relatively easy; a quick rinse with a hose removes most debris. Compared to my previous net, the conservation netting seems to hold fewer odors and dries more quickly.

Breaking Down the Features of Frabill Power Extend

Specifications

• The Frabill Power Extend features a revolutionary handled yoke system designed to minimize stress on the net during use. This yoke distributes the weight of the fish more evenly, preventing bending or breakage.
• A push-button release enables rapid extension of the handle, allowing for increased reach when needed. This is a crucial feature for anglers who fish from different elevations or need to quickly adjust their net length.
• The net boasts a reflective hoop and an optional lighted module (note: the description implies “lighted module guide movement to successfully land your catch”, but specs say “no” to additional features, so the light is separate), which enhances visibility in low-light conditions. This is exceptionally useful for dawn or dusk fishing, or when fishing in murky water.
• The asymmetrical, flat-bottomed shape of the net promotes fish conservation by providing a stable cradle for the catch. This design minimizes stress on the fish and allows for easier hook removal.
• It uses conservation netting, which is gentler on fish scales and slime compared to traditional nylon netting. This helps to increase survival rates for released fish.
• The net weighs 4.55 lb, which is heavier than many other landing nets on the market. Anglers should consider this weight if they plan to use the net for extended periods.
• The retracted length is 44 inches, while the extended length is not specified but is implied to provide significant extra reach. The hoop dimensions are 21.75 inches in width and 3 inches in height.

Performance & Functionality

The Frabill Power Extend performs admirably in landing fish efficiently and safely. The extendable handle is a game-changer, providing the necessary reach in various fishing scenarios.

The net’s design truly shines when handling larger fish. Its asymmetrical shape and conservation netting minimize stress on the catch, which is a high priority for catch-and-release anglers. However, the net’s weight can become a factor over time, especially if you’re constantly moving and casting.

Design & Ergonomics

The build quality of the Frabill Power Extend is generally good, with robust materials used throughout. The handle is comfortable to grip, even when wet.

However, the weight distribution could be improved. While the extendable handle is a great feature, the overall weight of the net and the slightly unbalanced feel when fully extended could lead to fatigue during extended use.

Durability & Maintenance

The materials used in the Frabill Power Extend seem durable, and the net has held up well to regular use in various conditions. The conservation netting is resistant to tearing and abrasion.

Maintenance is straightforward, with the net easily rinsed clean. The extension mechanism may require occasional lubrication to ensure smooth operation.

Accessories and Customization Options

The product description doesn’t explicitly list accessories included with the Frabill Power Extend, but one would expect basic documentation. While not detailed in the specs, a lighted module might be available separately to enhance the low-light capabilities of the reflective hoop.

There are no readily apparent customization options for the Frabill Power Extend. Given its specialized design, compatibility with third-party accessories may be limited.

Who Should Buy Frabill Power Extend?

The Frabill Power Extend is perfect for serious anglers who prioritize fish conservation and require extended reach when landing fish. This includes kayak anglers, boat anglers, and those who frequently fish from elevated banks or piers.

Anglers who primarily target smaller species or prioritize lightweight gear might find this net overkill. Those on a tight budget might also explore more affordable options.

A headlamp to illuminate the optional lighted module (if purchased) would be a must-have accessory.

Conclusion on Frabill Power Extend

The Frabill Power Extend is a well-designed and functional landing net with features that cater to the needs of serious anglers. Its extendable handle and fish-friendly design make it a valuable tool for ethical and efficient fishing.

While the price of $207.99 is higher than many standard landing nets, the added features and focus on fish conservation justify the cost for anglers who prioritize these aspects. The extendable handle alone is worth the price of admission for those who frequently fish from kayaks or elevated positions.

I would recommend the Frabill Power Extend to any angler looking for a durable, reliable, and fish-friendly landing net with extended reach capabilities.
