Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel Review

First Impressions of Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel

The Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel promises to be a game-changer for Glock enthusiasts looking to bridge the gap between pistol and carbine. Marketed as a perfect pairing for their APEX Bullpup Carbine Conversion Kit, this 16-inch barrel aims to deliver enhanced accuracy and a more compact, maneuverable platform. This barrel is manufactured by Meta Tactical. It had been a long time since I had seen a new barrel that offers such possibilities in terms of accuracy and ergonomics.

I’ve been tinkering with Glocks and carbine conversions for over a decade, always searching for that sweet spot of balance, power, and portability. My search started looking at alternatives to pistol caliber carbines, especially after encountering issues with shorter barrels and suboptimal ballistics. The allure of the Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel was its promise of rifle-length performance in a relatively compact package, especially when paired with a bullpup conversion. I was hoping for a reliable upgrade to my Glock 17 that could extend its effective range and improve accuracy without sacrificing too much maneuverability.

Upon unboxing, the barrel exudes quality; the nitride finish is smooth and even, and the chrome moly steel feels substantial. The slim profile is immediately noticeable. It’s clear that Meta Tactical paid close attention to weight reduction. Compared to some heavier, match-grade barrels I’ve used in the past, this one feels surprisingly light and well-balanced. I was immediately impressed by the finish and attention to detail.

I considered options from Faxon Firearms and Brownells, both reputable barrel manufacturers. However, the Meta Tactical barrel’s specific design for their APEX Bullpup kit and the promise of optimized performance within that system ultimately swayed me. The other factor was the polygonal rifling. The polygonal rifling and advertised tight tolerances also gave it an edge in my book.

I was cautiously optimistic. The claims of increased accuracy and reliability are bold, and I was eager to see if the Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel could live up to the hype. If it delivers, it could be the key to unlocking a new level of performance from my Glock 17.

Real-World Testing: Putting Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel to the Test

First Use Experience

My initial testing took place at my local shooting range, where I primarily focused on accuracy and reliability. I installed the Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel on my Gen 5 Glock 17 and paired it with the Meta Tactical APEX Bullpup Carbine Conversion Kit. It was a bit fiddly to install the barrel into the bullpup chassis initially, but it was ultimately a straightforward swap. I tested a variety of 9mm ammunition, including standard 115gr FMJ, 124gr +P hollow points, and some heavier 147gr subsonic rounds.

The performance was immediately noticeable. The longer barrel noticeably reduced felt recoil, and the point of aim felt much more stable. Accuracy improved significantly, with tighter groupings at 25 yards compared to the stock Glock barrel. I experienced no failures to feed or extract with any of the ammunition types.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months and hundreds of rounds, the Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel has proven to be remarkably reliable. I’ve run it through a variety of drills, from rapid-fire strings to precision shots at longer distances, and it has consistently performed without issue. The Nitride finish has held up well, showing no signs of wear or corrosion despite regular use and cleaning.

Maintenance is simple. A standard cleaning rod and bore brush are all that’s needed to keep the barrel clean and functioning properly. I’ve found that it cleans up easily after use, and I haven’t noticed any unusual fouling or buildup. Compared to some of my older barrels, the Meta Tactical barrel seems to require less frequent cleaning to maintain its accuracy.

In comparison to other aftermarket barrels I’ve used, the Meta Tactical barrel stands out for its consistent performance and reliability. I have used some other barrels that showed promise initially but quickly developed issues with accuracy or reliability over time. This Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel has been a refreshing experience in that respect.

Breaking Down the Features of Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel

Specifications

The Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel is chambered in 9mm Luger and designed specifically for Gen 5 Glock 17 pistols. It boasts a 16-inch barrel length, transforming your handgun into a carbine-length platform. The barrel is crafted from Chrome Moly steel with a durable Nitride finish for enhanced corrosion resistance and longevity.

It features a 1-10 twist rate, optimized for stabilizing a wide range of 9mm bullet weights. The barrel is also equipped with polygonal rifling, which is known for improving accuracy, reducing fouling, and increasing bullet velocity. It also does not feature any flutes.

These specifications are crucial for several reasons. The longer barrel length significantly increases bullet velocity, resulting in flatter trajectories and greater energy on target. The 1-10 twist rate ensures that bullets are properly stabilized, maximizing accuracy at longer ranges. The Nitride finish protects the barrel from the elements, extending its lifespan and maintaining its performance over time.

Performance & Functionality

The Meta Tactical Gen 5 Glock 17 Barrel excels in accuracy and reliability. With the polygonal rifling, I was able to achieve consistently tighter groupings at 25 yards and beyond. The longer barrel provides a more stable platform for aiming, further contributing to improved accuracy. I did not notice a difference in accuracy with or without a suppressor.

Design & Ergonomics

The barrel’s slim, lightweight design is a major advantage.
