First Thoughts on the ALLEN NEOP PISTOL POUCH Compact CHARC
The ALLEN NEOP PISTOL POUCH Compact CHARC promises to be a simple, affordable solution for protecting a compact pistol. Made by Allen, a company known for its budget-friendly outdoor gear, this pouch aims to provide basic protection without breaking the bank. As someone who’s handled countless holsters and cases over the years, I was curious to see how this minimalist offering would stack up.
I needed a discreet way to transport a small backup pistol in my range bag without it getting scratched or snagged on other gear. I’d been using a makeshift cloth wrap, which wasn’t ideal. The ALLEN NEOP PISTOL POUCH Compact CHARC seemed like a cheap and cheerful fix.
Upon unboxing – or rather, unwrapping, since it comes in minimal packaging – the pouch felt surprisingly soft and pliable. The charcoal-colored neoprene felt like it would offer decent cushioning. It was noticeably lighter and less structured than some of the more robust pistol cases I’ve used.
Compared to a rigid plastic pistol case or even a padded nylon holster, the ALLEN NEOP PISTOL POUCH Compact CHARC is decidedly less bulky. It’s more akin to a sock or sleeve for your firearm. I’ve used similar neoprene pouches from Uncle Mike’s and Blackhawk, but the ALLEN pouch is noticeably thinner than either of those.
My first impression was cautiously optimistic. It seemed well-suited for its intended purpose: basic protection during storage and transport. It won’t win any awards for tactical features or ruggedness, but for the price, it seemed like a reasonable starting point.
Real-World Testing: Putting ALLEN NEOP PISTOL POUCH Compact CHARC to the Test
First Use Experience
I primarily tested the ALLEN NEOP PISTOL POUCH Compact CHARC at my local shooting range. It held my Glock 43X perfectly within my range bag, preventing it from rubbing against magazines and other gear. The neoprene offered a snug fit.
The pouch performed adequately in dry conditions, but I also wanted to see how it handled moisture. I intentionally placed the pouch, with a (unloaded!) pistol inside, on a damp surface for a short period. The neoprene did absorb some moisture, but it seemed to dry relatively quickly. There were no immediate signs of damage to the pistol.
Using the pouch was straightforward. Simply slide the pistol in, and it’s protected. No complicated straps or zippers to contend with. After the first range session, there were no immediate issues. It served its basic function well.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of regular use, the ALLEN NEOP PISTOL POUCH Compact CHARC has held up surprisingly well. There are no rips or tears in the neoprene. The stitching still appears to be intact.
The durability is decent considering the price point. It’s not designed for heavy-duty use. There is some slight pilling of the neoprene in areas where it rubs against other objects in my range bag.
Maintenance is incredibly simple: I just wipe it down with a damp cloth if it gets dirty. The neoprene seems resistant to absorbing odors. Comparing it to my experiences with more expensive, padded cases, the ALLEN pouch offers less robust protection but is significantly lighter and more compact.
