First Impressions of Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait
The Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait isn’t just another lure; it’s a compact powerhouse designed to entice strikes with its unique sound and flash. Manufactured by Strike King, this 1/8 oz bait promises to be a tempting morsel for bass, especially when other surface lures fail to elicit a response. As an avid angler with over a decade of experience, I’m always on the lookout for effective tools, and the buzz surrounding this little bait piqued my interest.
What drew me to the Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait was its promise of a slow retrieve capability. In my local waters, bass often prefer a more subtle presentation, and the standard buzzbaits just move too fast. The three-bladed prop seemed like a promising solution to this problem, and I was eager to test if it would hold true to its claim.
Upon receiving the Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait, I was immediately impressed by its compact size and the flash of the Diamond Dust head and skirt. The build quality seemed solid for a lure in this price range, and the three-bladed prop spun freely with a satisfying whir. Its size is perfect for smaller ponds and creeks where larger buzzbaits can be overwhelming.
Compared to the Strike King Mini Pro Buzzbait and the Z-Man TRD BugZ, the Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait offered a unique combination of flash, sound, and slow retrieve potential. The Strike King Mini Pro Buzzbait is a proven performer, but I wanted something that could move even slower. The Z-Man TRD BugZ is great for finesse fishing, but it lacks the surface commotion of a buzzbait. I chose the Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King hoping it would bridge the gap between these two extremes.
My first impression was positive, I was excited to put the Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait to the test and see if it could live up to the hype and deliver strikes where other lures had failed. It felt like a well-designed lure with the potential to be a valuable addition to my tackle box.
Real-World Testing: Putting Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait on a local reservoir known for its pressured bass and clear water. The weather was overcast with a slight breeze, perfect conditions for topwater fishing. I used it in various areas, from open water to around submerged vegetation.
The Buzz King performed admirably, creating a noticeable surface disturbance even at a slow retrieve speed. I was able to keep it buzzing along the surface much slower than my standard buzzbaits, allowing the bass more time to react. On my third cast along a weed line, a feisty largemouth exploded on the lure, resulting in a successful hookset.
The only issue I encountered was the need for a slightly stronger hookset compared to larger buzzbaits. Its smaller size requires a bit more force to drive the hook home, but it wasn’t a significant problem.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the Strike King Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King Buzzbait has proven to be a reliable and effective lure. The Diamond Dust head and skirt have held up surprisingly well, showing minimal signs of wear and tear, despite numerous encounters with submerged structure and aggressive strikes. It has become a go-to bait in my arsenal.
Maintaining the Buzz King is simple; I just rinse it with fresh water after each use to remove any debris and ensure the prop spins freely. Compared to other buzzbaits I’ve used, the Tri-Wing Mini Buzz King requires less frequent tuning and adjustment. The durability and consistent performance of the Strike King bait outperform many of the other buzzbaits in its price range that I have previously used.
