As someone who has spent years in the field chasing everything from dove to pheasant, I’m always on the lookout for ammunition that offers consistent patterns and sufficient knockdown power. Lately, finding reliable, yet affordable shotgun shells has become increasingly challenging. So, when I saw the RIO Ammunition Top Game on sale, I decided to give it a try.
Upon receiving the ammunition, the packaging was standard, nothing flashy, but the shells themselves appeared well-made, with a clean crimp and consistent dimensions. Picking up a shell, it felt like any other 12-gauge load, perhaps a touch lighter than some of the premium hunting loads I’ve used in the past. The plastic hull felt sturdy enough, and the brass head looked properly seated.
I considered a few other budget-friendly options like Winchester Super X and Federal Game-Shok, but the price point of the RIO Ammunition Top Game, especially with the discount, was the deciding factor. Ultimately, the appeal of RIO’s promise of consistent patterns and reliable performance, combined with the significant price reduction, led me to choose this ammunition over its competitors. I also hoped RIO’s proprietary components would deliver tighter patterns than some of the cheaper alternatives I’ve tested.
My initial reaction was cautiously optimistic. While budget ammunition can sometimes be a gamble, the RIO Ammunition Top Game shells seemed to be of decent quality. I was eager to put them through their paces on the range and in the field to see if they lived up to the hype.
Real-World Testing: Putting RIO Ammunition Top Game 12 Gauge 1-1/4 oz 2-3/4″ Shotgun Ammunition TG369 43% Off to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial test of the RIO Ammunition Top Game took place at my local sporting clays range. The weather was clear and mild, perfect for a day of shooting. I used my trusty Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus, a semi-automatic shotgun known for its reliability with a wide range of loads.
The first few rounds cycled flawlessly through the Beretta. Recoil was noticeable but manageable, similar to other 1-1/4 oz loads I’ve shot. I patterned the RIO shells at 30 yards, and the results were surprisingly good for budget ammunition. The patterns were reasonably consistent, with a decent spread and a good number of pellets in the core.
Extended Use & Reliability
After the initial range test, I used the RIO Ammunition Top Game extensively over several weeks during dove and quail season. I fired hundreds of rounds in varying conditions, including hot, dusty afternoons and damp, chilly mornings. Over time, I observed the shells continued to perform reliably.
I did notice a bit more residue left in the barrel compared to some premium hunting loads, but cleaning was still relatively easy. The hulls held up well, with no signs of cracking or deformation after ejection. Compared to some cheaper shells I’ve used, the RIO Ammunition Top Game provided a noticeable improvement in pattern consistency and reliable cycling.
