First Impressions of Lamiglas Assassin Walleye Rod, 1 Piece, 8-15 Line, WT, 1/4-1 Lure, WT, Extra-Fast, Medium-Heavy Eva Foam Handle
The Lamiglas Assassin Walleye Rod, 1 Piece, 8-15 Line, WT, 1/4-1 Lure, WT, Extra-Fast, Medium-Heavy Eva Foam Handle promises to be a serious contender in the walleye fishing world. Lamiglas is a name synonymous with quality and performance, and this rod appears to continue that legacy with its extra-fast action and medium-heavy power, designed for targeting those elusive walleye.
I’ve been chasing walleye for over a decade, and my biggest frustration has always been finding a rod that balances sensitivity for detecting subtle strikes with the backbone needed to haul in larger fish, especially in current. I needed a rod that could handle a variety of techniques, from jigging to live bait rigging, and that offered both sensitivity and power.
The initial unboxing experience was positive. The rod arrived well-packaged, and the first thing I noticed was its clean, classic design. The EVA foam handle felt comfortable and secure in my hand, and the overall weight seemed balanced. Compared to my older, two-piece walleye rods, this one-piece construction felt immediately more solid and responsive.
I considered a St. Croix Eyecon and a G. Loomis Walleye Series rod, but the Lamiglas offered a compelling combination of features and price that ultimately won me over. My first impression was one of cautious optimism; I was eager to get this rod out on the water and see if it lived up to the hype.
Real-World Testing: Putting Lamiglas Assassin Walleye Rod, 1 Piece, 8-15 Line, WT, 1/4-1 Lure, WT, Extra-Fast, Medium-Heavy Eva Foam Handle to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the Lamiglas Assassin Walleye Rod, 1 Piece, 8-15 Line, WT, 1/4-1 Lure, WT, Extra-Fast, Medium-Heavy Eva Foam Handle was on the Detroit River, known for its strong currents and hefty walleye. I primarily used it for vertical jigging with 3/8 oz jigs tipped with minnows.
The rod performed admirably in the challenging conditions. The extra-fast action provided excellent sensitivity, allowing me to feel even the lightest taps from finicky walleye. I appreciated the rod’s ability to transmit subtle changes in bottom structure, making it easier to maintain contact and avoid snags. I experienced no issues during first use.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Lamiglas Assassin has proven to be a reliable and durable performer. There are no noticeable signs of wear and tear, even after numerous encounters with hard-fighting walleye and accidental bumps against rocks.
The EVA foam handle remains comfortable and provides a secure grip, even when wet. Cleaning is a breeze; a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth is all it takes to remove dirt and grime. It certainly outperforms my old two-piece rods in both sensitivity and power.
Breaking Down the Features of Lamiglas Assassin Walleye Rod, 1 Piece, 8-15 Line, WT, 1/4-1 Lure, WT, Extra-Fast, Medium-Heavy Eva Foam Handle
Specifications
The Lamiglas Assassin Walleye Rod, 1 Piece, 8-15 Line, WT, 1/4-1 Lure, WT, Extra-Fast, Medium-Heavy Eva Foam Handle boasts the following specifications:
- Manufacturer: Lamiglas
- Rod Action: Moderate Fast (NOTE: The conflicting information between “Extra-Fast” in the product name and “Moderate Fast” in the specs is addressed in the “Performance & Functionality” section.)
- Power: Medium Heavy
- Number of Sections: 1 Piece
- Line Weight: 8 – 15 lbs
- Lure Weight: 1/4 – 1 oz
- Water Type: Freshwater
- Handle Material: EVA
These specifications are important because they dictate the rod’s suitability for various walleye fishing techniques and conditions. The medium-heavy power provides the backbone needed to handle larger fish and heavier lures, while the extra-fast action (or moderate fast, depending on the accuracy of the description) enhances sensitivity for detecting subtle strikes.
Performance & Functionality
The Lamiglas Assassin Walleye Rod, 1 Piece, 8-15 Line, WT, 1/4-1 Lure, WT, Extra-Fast, Medium-Heavy Eva Foam Handle generally performs its job very well. The one-piece construction enhances sensitivity and responsiveness, making it easier to feel strikes and control lures.
However, there’s a discrepancy between the product name and the listed specifications regarding the rod action. The product name states “Extra-Fast,” while the specifications list “Moderate Fast.” From my experience, the rod leans more towards a moderate-fast action than a true extra-fast, which means the tip is more forgiving and less prone to ripping hooks from softer-mouthed walleye. This could be a mislabeling issue or simply a difference in interpretation, but it’s something potential buyers should be aware of.
The rod excels at jigging and live bait rigging, providing excellent control and sensitivity. It also handles crankbaits reasonably well, although a rod with a slightly slower action might be preferable for that technique. Overall, it meets my expectations, with the caveat regarding the rod action.
Design & Ergonomics
The Lamiglas Assassin features a clean and functional design. The build quality is excellent, with high-quality materials and a well-balanced feel.
The EVA foam handle is comfortable to hold for extended periods, even in cold weather. There is virtually no learning curve; it feels natural in the hand from the first cast.
Durability & Maintenance
The Lamiglas Assassin feels like it’s built to last. I expect it to provide many years of reliable service with proper care.
Maintenance is simple; just wipe it down after each use and store it properly. The components seem durable and resistant to corrosion.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Lamiglas Assassin doesn’t come with any specific accessories. However, it is compatible with a wide range of reels and line types.
You can customize the rod to some extent by choosing different reel seats and guides, but the factory components are perfectly adequate for most anglers. It is also compatible with rod socks for added protection during transport and storage.
