Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV Inteli Power 9100 Series Converter/Charger 45 Amp Review

Let’s Dive into Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV Inteli Power 9100 Series Converter/Charger 45 Amp

The Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV Inteli Power 9100 Series Converter/Charger 45 Amp is a cornerstone for reliable 12V power in RVs and off-grid setups. Designed by Progressive Dynamics, this converter/charger delivers filtered DC power, protecting your appliances and charging your batteries with smarts and safety. It’s more than just a power supply; it’s a safeguard for your electrical system.

I was tired of inconsistent power frying my sensitive electronics when dry camping. I needed a converter/charger that could handle voltage fluctuations, protect against reverse polarity, and intelligently charge my batteries without overcharging them. The PD9145AV seemed to tick all the boxes on paper.

My first impression upon unboxing was its robust build quality. The metal casing felt solid, and the wiring connections were clearly labeled. It felt like a serious piece of equipment, reassuring after dealing with flimsy converters in the past.

Compared to a cheaper WFCO converter and a more expensive Xantrex unit I’d considered, the Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV struck a balance. The WFCO lacked the intelligent charging features, while the Xantrex was overkill for my needs, with a price tag I couldn’t justify. I chose the PD9145AV for its combination of essential features, reliability, and reasonable price point.

I was initially excited, bordering on hopeful, rather than outright impressed. This excitement stemmed from the promise of solving my power woes once and for all. The reliability of Progressive Dynamics was something I had heard of from other RV enthusiasts, so I was hopeful.

Real-World Testing: Putting Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV Inteli Power 9100 Series Converter/Charger 45 Amp to the Test

First Use Experience

I installed the Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV in my travel trailer before a week-long off-grid camping trip in the Mojave Desert. This trip presented a mix of intense daytime heat and cool nighttime temperatures, along with the constant presence of fine desert dust. I was primarily using it to power the trailer’s 12V lighting, water pump, and charging various USB devices through 12V adapters.

The PD9145AV performed flawlessly, maintaining a stable voltage even with fluctuating loads and power demands. There were no noticeable voltage drops when the water pump kicked on or when multiple devices were charging simultaneously. The desert dust didn’t seem to affect its operation, which was a relief.

It was easy to use right out of the box, thanks to the clearly labeled connections and straightforward installation process. I simply connected it to the battery, the 120V AC power source, and the 12V distribution panel. No complex programming or setup was required.

The only minor surprise was the fan noise. It wasn’t loud, but definitely noticeable, especially during quiet nights. However, I quickly realized the variable speed fan only kicks in when the unit is working hard, and it remained mostly silent during low-demand periods.

Extended Use & Reliability

After six months of regular use, including several more camping trips and occasional use as a battery maintainer during storage, the Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV has proven to be remarkably reliable. There are no signs of wear and tear, and the unit continues to operate smoothly. The metal casing still looks new and robust.

Maintenance is minimal; I simply wipe down the unit occasionally to remove dust and ensure the wiring connections remain secure. I’ve cleaned the fan vent once to prevent dust buildup. So far I have encountered no problems and it requires very little maintenance.

This outperforms my previous converter/charger significantly. It maintained a steadier voltage and charged batteries faster. The intelligent charging modes truly seem to prolong battery life.

Breaking Down the Features of Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV Inteli Power 9100 Series Converter/Charger 45 Amp

Specifications

• Reverse Battery Protection: This prevents damage from accidentally connecting the battery leads incorrectly. This is a critical safeguard for anyone working with electrical systems.
• Filtered DC Power Delivery: Provides clean and stable 12V power to all your RV’s lighting and appliance circuits. This protects sensitive electronics from voltage spikes and fluctuations.
• Electronic Current Limiting: Automatically reduces the output voltage when the maximum capacity is reached. This prevents overloading the converter and protects your circuits.
• Low Line Voltage Protection: Shuts the converter down automatically if the input voltage is insufficient. This protects your appliances from damage caused by low voltage irregularities.
• Two-Year Limited Warranty: This provides peace of mind, demonstrating the manufacturer’s confidence in the product’s quality and durability. It’s a solid backing.

These specifications are crucial because they directly impact the reliability and safety of your RV’s electrical system. The Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV focuses on protecting your batteries and appliances from common electrical issues. This is especially important when relying on generator power or dealing with fluctuating campground power sources.

Performance & Functionality

The Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV excels at its core job: reliably converting 120V AC power to 12V DC power for your RV’s systems and charging your batteries. The multi-stage charging profile is effective at optimizing battery life and charge speed. It switches automatically between boost, normal, and float modes to provide the ideal charging voltage for each stage.

A strength is its ability to handle varying load demands without faltering, while the intelligent charging is extremely useful for long term battery health. A weakness is the noticeable fan noise at higher loads. It is, however, still quieter than other units I have used.

It definitely meets my expectations and then some. The protection features and battery health optimization were pleasant surprises.

Design & Ergonomics

The Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV features a utilitarian, no-frills design with a sturdy metal casing. Its design prioritizes function over aesthetics. It’s not the prettiest piece of equipment, but it’s built to last.

The unit is relatively lightweight and compact, making it easy to install in tight spaces. The connections are clearly labeled and accessible. There is a slight learning curve understanding the charging stages, but this is easily overcome with the manual.

Durability & Maintenance

Given the robust metal casing and high-quality components, the Progressive Dynamics PD9145AV is expected to last for many years with proper care. The reverse polarity protection and other safety features further enhance its longevity.

Maintenance is straightforward. Routine checks for dust accumulation and secure wiring connections are all that’s typically required. The simplicity of the design lends to its ruggedness.
