Let’s Talk About the WOOX VOLANTE Axe
The WOOX VOLANTE Axe is more than just a cutting tool; it’s a meticulously crafted instrument designed for both precision wood work and axe throwing. WOOX, known for blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design, has seemingly hit a sweet spot with the VOLANTE. I’ve always been drawn to tools that are both functional and beautiful, and the WOOX VOLANTE Axe, with its promises of one-handed usability and competition-grade throwing capability, piqued my interest.
My need for a compact, versatile axe stemmed from years of struggling with larger, less maneuverable axes on backcountry trips. I yearned for something I could easily pack, quickly deploy for tasks like clearing brush, and even enjoy in a friendly axe-throwing competition. Unboxing the VOLANTE was a tactile experience, immediately highlighting the quality of the American Appalachian Hickory handle and the striking blue polished finish of the C45/1045 tempered carbon steel head.
Compared to other hatchets and throwing axes I’ve used, such as the Estwing Sportsman’s Axe and the Cold Steel Throwing Axe, the WOOX VOLANTE Axe stood out for its refined design and promises of dual functionality. The Estwing, while durable, lacked the finesse for precise work, and the Cold Steel, primarily a throwing axe, felt less suited for general outdoor tasks. I chose the VOLANTE hoping for a blend of both worlds, a tool that could perform as well as it looked.
My first impression was excitement mixed with a touch of skepticism. The VOLANTE felt incredibly balanced in hand, but I wondered if its relatively light weight (1.7 lbs) would compromise its chopping power. Only real-world testing could reveal its true capabilities.
Real-World Testing: Putting the WOOX VOLANTE Axe to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing ground for the WOOX VOLANTE Axe was a weekend camping trip in the Appalachian Mountains. I wanted to evaluate its performance in real-world conditions, from preparing firewood to clearing overgrown trails. The first task was gathering kindling.
The VOLANTE proved surprisingly adept at splitting small pieces of wood. Its sharp blade and balanced weight allowed for quick, clean cuts. Working in damp conditions, the hickory handle provided a secure grip, even with slightly wet hands. There was a slight learning curve in adapting to the shorter handle, but it was easy enough to overcome.
I also used the VOLANTE to clear some low-hanging branches along a hiking trail. Its lightweight design made it easy to swing one-handed, and the blade retained its edge even after repeated use. The axe performed admirably well.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the WOOX VOLANTE Axe has held up remarkably well. I’ve used it for everything from splitting firewood at home to maintaining trails on my property. The blade shows minimal signs of wear and tear, a testament to the quality of the tempered carbon steel.
The hickory handle has also proven to be exceptionally durable. It has absorbed countless impacts without cracking or splintering. Cleaning and maintaining the VOLANTE is a simple process; a quick wipe down with a dry cloth and occasional application of mineral oil to the handle keeps it in top condition.
Compared to my previous experiences with other axes, the WOOX VOLANTE Axe strikes a compelling balance between portability, performance, and aesthetics. It outperforms heavier axes in terms of ease of use and maneuverability, while also delivering impressive chopping power for its size. It’s exceeded my expectations in both form and function.
