Ravin R18 330fps Vertical Limb Crossbow Kit Review

Let’s Talk About Ravin R18 330fps Vertical Limb Crossbow Kit

The Ravin R18 330fps Vertical Limb Crossbow Kit from Ravin represents a significant leap in crossbow design, offering an incredibly compact and maneuverable package for hunters and tactical enthusiasts. Its defining feature is the VertiCoil Cam System, allowing for an astonishingly narrow axle-to-axle width. This, combined with its takedown design and integrated cocking mechanism, makes it a compelling option for those prioritizing portability and ease of use.

I was searching for a crossbow that could easily be transported in a smaller vehicle and used effectively in dense brush. My traditional crossbow, while powerful, felt like trying to maneuver a small tree through the woods. The promise of the Ravin R18’s compactness immediately caught my eye.

Upon unboxing, the Ravin R18 immediately impressed with its solid construction and innovative design. The materials felt high-quality, and the built-in cocking mechanism operated smoothly. The takedown feature with the detachable stock seemed well-engineered, contributing to the overall feeling of a premium product.

Compared to my existing Barnett Whitetail Hunter Pro STR and a friend’s TenPoint Titan M1, the Ravin R18 was in a different league regarding size and ease of cocking. I chose the Ravin R18 for its unmatched portability and the promise of precise shots in tight hunting scenarios, where the others felt cumbersome. I was genuinely excited about the possibilities it presented.

Real-World Testing: Putting Ravin R18 330fps Vertical Limb Crossbow Kit to the Test

First Use Experience

My first outing with the Ravin R18 was at a local archery range followed by a scouting trip in the thick woods of upstate New York. The archery range allowed me to dial in the Ravin 3-Dot Reflex Sight, while the woods offered a real-world environment to assess maneuverability.

The Ravin R18 performed surprisingly well in both settings, even after an unexpected light rain shower. The compact design allowed for quick target acquisition in the woods, and the reflex sight proved accurate at distances up to 40 yards once zeroed. Getting used to the unique feel of the vertical limbs took a few shots, but I adapted quickly.

The integrated cocking mechanism made it remarkably easy to cock the crossbow, even while kneeling. The initial surprise was how quiet the Ravin R18 was compared to other crossbows I’ve used, a significant advantage for hunting.

Extended Use & Reliability

After three months of regular use, including several hunting trips and weekly range sessions, the Ravin R18 continues to perform admirably. There are no signs of significant wear and tear.

The finish has held up well despite being bumped against trees and rocks, and the strings and cables show minimal fraying. The Ravin R18 is relatively easy to clean with a basic crossbow maintenance kit. A light coating of string wax after each use keeps everything functioning smoothly.

Compared to my previous crossbow, the Ravin R18 offers superior portability and a much easier cocking process. It does require specialized arrows, which can be a drawback, but the improved accuracy and ease of handling more than compensate.
