Let’s Talk About Aero Precision M5 20in .308 Winchester RM15 Complete Upper Receiver
The Aero Precision M5 20in .308 Winchester RM15 Complete Upper Receiver represents a sweet spot in the AR-10 world, blending quality construction with a focus on practical performance. Aero Precision has built a solid reputation for delivering reliable components, and this complete upper receiver promises to continue that trend. It boasts a 20-inch barrel, a 15-inch R-ONE handguard, and chambered in the potent .308 Winchester, setting it up as a versatile option for hunting, long-range shooting, and even tactical applications.
I was looking for a .308 upper receiver that could deliver accuracy at extended ranges without breaking the bank. I needed something reliable enough for hunting season but also capable of ringing steel at 600+ yards. This upper seemed to strike the right balance.
Out of the box, the Aero Precision M5 upper feels solid and well-assembled. The finish is clean and even, and the handguard locks up tightly with the upper receiver. The weight is noticeable, a given with a 20-inch barrel, but it feels balanced and manageable.
Compared to similar offerings from other manufacturers, like those from Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM) or Daniel Defense, the Aero Precision M5 stood out because of its price point. While BCM and Daniel Defense offer exceptional quality, the Aero Precision allowed me to get into the .308 AR platform without significantly impacting my budget. The inclusion of the R-ONE handguard was also a major selling point.
My first impression was positive; the Aero Precision M5 upper receiver felt like a serious piece of equipment. I was excited to get it out to the range and see what it could do.
Real-World Testing: Putting Aero Precision M5 20in .308 Winchester RM15 Complete Upper Receiver to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Aero Precision M5 upper receiver at my local shooting range, known for its 300-yard lanes. The weather was clear and mild, making for ideal shooting conditions. I paired it with an Aero Precision M5 lower receiver and a quality optic.
The performance was immediately impressive. The rifle length gas system contributed to a smooth recoil impulse, making it comfortable to shoot even with heavier .308 loads. I was able to achieve sub-MOA groups at 100 yards with match-grade ammunition.
The only initial issue I encountered was a slight break-in period. During the first 20 rounds, there were a couple of failures to extract. After that, the upper ran flawlessly.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use, the Aero Precision M5 upper has proven to be incredibly reliable. I’ve put several hundred rounds through it, ranging from cheap surplus ammunition to high-end match-grade loads, and it has performed admirably. There have been no further malfunctions after the initial break-in period.
The finish has held up well, showing minimal signs of wear and tear despite being used in various weather conditions. Cleaning and maintenance are straightforward. The nitride-finished barrel is easy to wipe down, and the overall design is simple to disassemble and reassemble.
Compared to my previous experiences with other AR-10 platforms, the Aero Precision M5 has exceeded expectations. It offers a level of accuracy and reliability that rivals more expensive options.
