Vexilar FLX-20 Genz Pack w/12 Ice Ducer Review

Let’s Talk About Vexilar FLX-20 Genz Pack w/12 Ice Ducer

The Vexilar FLX-20 Genz Pack w/12 Ice Ducer is a complete ice fishing sonar system designed for anglers of all skill levels. This portable unit, brought to you by Vexilar, offers essential fish-finding capabilities in a rugged and user-friendly package, including a battery, charger, and transducer. It promises to be a reliable tool on the ice, but let’s see if it lives up to the hype.

For years, I’ve been relying on older flashers, always feeling like I was missing subtle cues beneath the ice. I needed a more modern and reliable unit that could provide clear target separation and depth readings. This flasher promised ease of use and precise readings, potentially solving my biggest problem: identifying small fish and differentiating between fish and structure.

Upon unboxing, the unit feels solid and well-constructed. The Genz Pack is noticeably robust, and the included battery feels like it will offer a decent amount of time on the ice. Initial impressions suggest a well-thought-out design, and the color scheme is certainly eye-catching.

Compared to some of the other units I was considering, like the Humminbird ICE HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G2 or the Garmin STRIKER Vivid 5cv Ice Fishing Bundle, the Vexilar FLX-20 Genz Pack w/12 Ice Ducer stood out for its simplicity and targeted functionality. While the others offered GPS and advanced features, I valued the Vexilar’s focus on providing a clear and reliable flasher unit without the added complexity, hoping that would equate to more fishing time and less fiddling with settings. I chose this because I trust Vexilar’s reputation for quality flashers and their ice fishing-specific design.

My first impression was excitement mixed with a healthy dose of skepticism. Flashers can be finicky, but the Vexilar’s reputation for reliability, paired with the complete package including battery and charger, made me optimistic. Only time on the ice would tell if it could truly enhance my ice fishing experience.

Real-World Testing: Putting Vexilar FLX-20 Genz Pack w/12 Ice Ducer to the Test

First Use Experience

My first outing with the Vexilar FLX-20 Genz Pack w/12 Ice Ducer was on Lake Simcoe in Ontario, Canada, targeting lake trout and whitefish. The ice was thick, and the conditions were cold but clear. I set up my shelter and deployed the Ice-Ducer through the hole.

The Vexilar performed admirably, providing clear target separation even in 40 feet of water. The flasher display was easy to read, even in direct sunlight, which is a common issue with other units. It only took a few minutes to dial in the sensitivity and find the bottom, making it user-friendly right out of the box. The battery lasted for over 8 hours of continuous use, exceeding my initial expectations.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of consistent use in varying conditions – from frigid -20°C days on frozen lakes to slushy afternoons – the Vexilar FLX-20 Genz Pack w/12 Ice Ducer has proven itself to be a reliable companion. The Genz Pack has held up remarkably well to the bumps and scrapes that inevitably come with ice fishing. The controls remain responsive and the display clear.

Aside from a few minor scratches on the plastic housing, there are no significant signs of wear and tear. The unit is easily cleaned with a damp cloth, and the transducer cable remains flexible even in extreme cold. This is a significant improvement over previous flashers I’ve owned, which often suffered from frozen cables and unreliable readings after prolonged use. It consistently outperforms my older flashers in terms of target separation and ease of use.
