Eley is renowned for their commitment to precision and consistency, a reputation built over decades of producing match-grade ammunition. This particular round aims to bring that same level of quality to a subsonic platform, making it ideal for suppressed firearms and situations where noise reduction is paramount.
My journey to discover the Eley Ammunition Eley Ammo Subsonic .22lr 38gr. Hollow Point stemmed from a very specific need. Living in a more populated area now, I wanted to enjoy target practice and small game hunting without disturbing the peace, which meant seeking out a reliable subsonic .22LR option. I’d heard whispers of Eley’s quality, so I decided to put it to the test.
Unboxing the Eley Subsonic ammo revealed a neatly organized box of 50 rounds, each bearing the Eley name. The lead hollow points appeared clean and consistent, with a well-defined cavity designed for optimal expansion upon impact. The ammunition exuded quality, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype.
Compared to other subsonic .22LR offerings like CCI Subsonic Hollow Point and Aguila Super Extra Subsonic, the Eley stood out due to its reputation for consistency. CCI is a reliable standard, and Aguila is often more affordable, but I wanted the best possible accuracy and reliability in a subsonic round. I chose Eley based on its potential to deliver superior performance in both suppressed and unsuppressed firearms.
My initial impression of the Eley Ammunition Eley Ammo Subsonic .22lr 38gr. Hollow Point was one of cautious optimism. First Use Experience
My first experience with the Eley Ammunition Eley Ammo Subsonic .22lr 38gr. Hollow Point was at my local outdoor shooting range, with both a suppressed bolt-action rifle and an unsuppressed pistol. The weather was mild, with a slight breeze.
The suppressed rifle exhibited excellent sound reduction, significantly quieter than standard velocity .22LR rounds. The pistol, without a suppressor, was noticeably louder but still less sharp and jarring than high-velocity ammunition. I also noted that the rounds felt very smooth and consistent when loading and extracting.
Using the ammo felt good and easy, it required no special adjustments. I noticed one anomaly, which was that occasionally the ammo would not load correctly causing a jam, though I think this was due to the gun as I didn’t experience it on my other .22.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use across various firearms, the Eley Ammunition Eley Ammo Subsonic .22lr 38gr. Hollow Point has proven to be remarkably reliable. I have run hundreds of rounds through my suppressed rifle, with very few malfunctions.
The ammunition has shown minimal signs of wear and tear, even after being stored for extended periods. I clean my firearms regularly, so maintenance has been straightforward. Eley ammunition continues to impress with its consistent performance and reliability.
Compared to my previous experiences with other subsonic .22LR rounds, the Eley consistently outperforms them in terms of accuracy and sound suppression. While some cheaper options may be sufficient for plinking, the Eley ammunition is my go-to choice when performance matters most.
