Let’s Talk About **PPU Metric Rifle 8mm Mauser 196 Grain Soft Point Brass Cased Rifle Ammunition
PP8S $3.01 Off**
The PPU Metric Rifle 8mm Mauser 196 Grain Soft Point Brass Cased Rifle Ammunition PP8S $3.01 Off represents a solid, reliable option for shooters of the venerable 8mm Mauser rifle. Manufactured by PPU (Prvi Partizan), this ammunition is designed for both hunting and general range use, offering a good balance of performance and affordability. It’s a cartridge that brings back memories of classic bolt-action rifles and echoes of hunting trips past, but can it still hold its own in the modern era?
My journey to this particular ammunition stemmed from a desire to find a cost-effective, yet accurate, round for my restored Mauser K98k. The rifle, a piece of history in itself, deserved to be fed quality ammunition without breaking the bank. I was looking for something that could handle both casual target practice and potentially be used for deer hunting in a pinch.
The initial unboxing experience was straightforward. The PPU ammunition came packaged in a standard cardboard box, neatly arranged with 20 rounds of brass-cased cartridges. The rounds themselves appeared clean and well-made, with the soft point bullets exhibiting a consistent shape.
I considered other options, like surplus military ammunition or higher-end hunting rounds from brands like Federal or Hornady. However, surplus ammo can be unreliable and corrosive, while the premium hunting loads were simply too expensive for regular use. The PPU seemed to strike the right balance between price and performance, promising acceptable accuracy and reliable feeding.
My first impression was cautiously optimistic. The ammo looked good, and the price was right, but the true test would be how it performed downrange.
Real-World Testing: Putting **PPU Metric Rifle 8mm Mauser 196 Grain Soft Point Brass Cased Rifle Ammunition
PP8S $3.01 Off** to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing took place at an outdoor shooting range on a crisp autumn day. I set up targets at 100 yards and prepared to zero my Mauser. The weather was ideal, with minimal wind and clear skies.
The PPU ammunition performed admirably from the first shot. Feeding and extraction were smooth and consistent, with no noticeable issues. The recoil was manageable, typical of the 8mm Mauser cartridge, and the report was satisfyingly loud.
I did notice a slight variation in muzzle velocity compared to the advertised specifications, but this is common with different rifles and barrel lengths. There were no malfunctions or failures to fire during the first range session.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, including multiple range trips and a brief hunting excursion, the PPU ammunition has proven to be remarkably consistent. The rounds consistently chamber and fire without issue. Cleaning my rifle after using this ammunition is simple.
I haven’t observed any significant wear and tear on my rifle’s bore or action attributable to the ammunition. Compared to some cheaper, steel-cased alternatives I’ve used in other rifles, the PPU brass casings are much easier on the extractor and provide a smoother overall shooting experience. The brass casings are reloadable, adding extra value.
In comparison to my previous experience with surplus 8mm Mauser ammunition, the PPU offers superior accuracy and reliability. The surplus ammo often exhibited inconsistent powder charges and questionable bullet seating, leading to erratic groupings and occasional malfunctions.
