The rounds looked clean, consistent, and professionally assembled, giving me a sense of confidence before even hitting the range. Having used similar match-grade ammunition from Federal and Hornady, I was curious to see how the Barnes offering would compare in terms of accuracy and consistency. First Use Experience
I tested the Barnes Precision Match ammunition at my local shooting range, which offers distances out to 600 yards. The weather was mild with a slight crosswind, providing a realistic test of the ammunition’s performance in less-than-ideal conditions. From the first shot, the recoil felt consistent, and the sound signature was uniform across each round fired. I didn’t experience any malfunctions or issues related to chambering or extraction during the initial session.
The primary surprise came with the initial groupings at 100 yards; they were tighter than I anticipated based on my experience with other factory loads in my 6.5 Grendel. Typically, I would see groupings around 1 MOA with other match-grade ammo. However, the Barnes ammunition consistently produced sub-MOA groupings, indicating a clear improvement in accuracy for my rifle setup.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, encompassing hundreds of rounds fired, the Barnes Precision Match ammunition has proven to be exceptionally reliable. The brass cases show no signs of excessive wear or deformation after firing, indicating good quality control in the manufacturing process. Maintaining the rifle after each range session is straightforward, with standard cleaning procedures sufficient to remove any residue. The performance of this ammunition has consistently exceeded my expectations, particularly at longer distances.
Compared to my previous experiences with other brands, the Barnes ammunition offers a noticeable improvement in consistency, especially when accounting for variations in weather conditions. The Doppler radar-generated drop tables provided by Barnes have been invaluable in accurately predicting bullet trajectory at extended ranges, contributing to more consistent hits on target.
