Safariland 6354 ALS Tactical Thigh Holster – STX Foliage Green, Right Hand 6354-149-541 Review

Let’s Dive into Safariland 6354 ALS Tactical Thigh Holster – STX Foliage Green, Right Hand 6354-149-541

The Safariland 6354 ALS Tactical Thigh Holster – STX Foliage Green, Right Hand 6354-149-541 is more than just a holster; it’s a statement. This thigh rig, manufactured by Safariland, boasts the Automatic Locking System (ALS) for secure weapon retention, coupled with a comfortable and stable thigh platform. The foliage green STX finish adds a tactical aesthetic, making it a popular choice for law enforcement and military professionals alike.

For years, I relied on a standard belt holster, which worked fine for range days. However, during a recent tactical training course, I realized I needed a more versatile and accessible option. The thigh holster promised quicker draws and the ability to carry additional gear on my belt, making the Safariland 6354 ALS a logical choice.

Upon unboxing, the holster immediately impressed me with its robust construction and attention to detail. The SafariLaminate material felt incredibly durable, and the suede lining hinted at the care taken to protect the firearm’s finish. The double leg straps and adjustable belt attachment gave me confidence in its stability and fit.

Compared to the Blackhawk! Serpa thigh holster and the Blade-Tech WRS Level II Duty Holster, the Safariland 6354 ALS stood out due to its intuitive ALS system and comfortable thigh platform. While the Serpa offers a similar locking mechanism, the Safariland felt more secure and less prone to accidental release. The Blade-Tech holster, while offering excellent retention, lacked the accessibility and versatility of a thigh rig.

My initial impression was one of excitement and anticipation. The Safariland 6354 ALS Tactical Thigh Holster seemed to be the perfect solution for my needs, promising a blend of security, accessibility, and comfort. Now it was time to put it to the test.

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6354 ALS Tactical Thigh Holster – STX Foliage Green, Right Hand 6354-149-541 to the Test

First Use Experience

I first tested the Safariland 6354 ALS Tactical Thigh Holster at an outdoor shooting range, focusing on rapid draw drills and movement exercises. The holster performed admirably, keeping my Springfield XD 9mm secure during sprints and transitions. The ALS system allowed for a smooth and intuitive draw with minimal training.

The weather was mildly dusty, but the holster’s design kept debris from interfering with the locking mechanism. I found the double leg straps and adjustable belt attachment to be effective in maintaining a stable and comfortable fit. I didn’t need much time to get used to the draw stroke; the ALS release became second nature after only a few repetitions.

The only minor issue I encountered during my first use was the initial adjustment of the leg straps. Fine-tuning the fit took a few tries, but once dialed in, the holster stayed put. The suede lining effectively protected the finish of my firearm, showing no signs of wear or scratches after several draws.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of use, including weekly range sessions and a multi-day tactical training exercise, the Safariland 6354 ALS Tactical Thigh Holster has proven to be incredibly reliable. The SafariLaminate construction shows no signs of wear or tear, even after repeated exposure to the elements. The stitching remains tight, and the ALS mechanism continues to function flawlessly.

Cleaning and maintaining the holster is straightforward, requiring only a damp cloth to wipe away dirt and debris. I periodically apply a silicone-based lubricant to the ALS mechanism to ensure smooth operation. Compared to my previous experience with nylon holsters, the Safariland 6354 ALS far surpasses them in durability and retention.

It consistently outperforms in terms of draw speed and secure weapon retention. The peace of mind knowing my firearm is secure, yet readily accessible, is invaluable in tactical situations.
