Let’s Dive into Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – Plain Black, Left Hand 6287-291-62
The Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – Plain Black, Left Hand 6287-291-62 is more than just a piece of gear; it’s a statement. This holster from Safariland, a brand synonymous with quality and reliability in law enforcement and tactical circles, promises secure concealment and rapid access for left-handed shooters. Its defining feature, the SLS (Self Locking System), offers a unique blend of security and speed, crucial for anyone carrying a firearm for personal defense or professional duty.
My journey to this particular holster started with a need for reliable, yet discreet, carry. I wanted something that provided top-tier retention without sacrificing my ability to quickly draw my weapon when needed. Having tried several other concealment holsters that either lacked sufficient retention or were simply too bulky, I was in search of a solution that struck the perfect balance.
Upon unboxing, the Safariland 6287 exudes a sense of quality and robustness. The plain black finish is understated and professional, while the overall construction feels solid and well-thought-out. The holster isn’t overly heavy, but it has enough heft to inspire confidence in its durability.
Compared to other concealment holsters I’ve used, such as the Galco KingTuk or the Blackhawk Serpa CQC (both right-handed versions, naturally), the Safariland 6287 stands out due to its SLS retention system. While the Galco offers comfort and the Blackhawk emphasizes speed, the Safariland prioritizes security without compromising accessibility, a feature I found incredibly appealing. My first impression was excitement, mixed with a healthy dose of anticipation to test its performance in real-world scenarios.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – Plain Black, Left Hand 6287-291-62 to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Safariland 6287 at my local shooting range, incorporating it into my regular drills. This included drawing from concealment, re-holstering under pressure, and performing various shooting exercises while wearing the holster. The holster was also tested during several weekend hikes in varying weather conditions.
The holster performed admirably in both dry and slightly damp conditions. The SLS system remained easy to operate even with wet hands. Drawing the weapon required a deliberate motion to disengage the SLS hood, but it quickly became intuitive with practice.
The initial learning curve involved getting accustomed to the SLS release motion. There were a few fumbled draws at first, but after about an hour of practice, the motion became second nature. After the first use, I was impressed with the balance of security and accessibility.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use, the Safariland 6287 has proven to be a reliable and durable piece of gear. There are only minor signs of wear and tear, primarily scuff marks on the exterior from daily use. The SLS mechanism continues to function smoothly and securely.
Maintaining the 6287 is straightforward. A simple wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and grime. I occasionally apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the SLS hood to ensure smooth operation.
Compared to previous concealment holsters I’ve used, the Safariland 6287 excels in both retention and comfort. The semi-hi-ride position and forward cant offer a comfortable and concealable carry. It outperforms other holsters in terms of providing peace of mind, knowing my firearm is secure yet readily accessible.

Performance & Functionality
The Safariland 6287 excels at its primary function: securely concealing a firearm while providing rapid access when needed. The SLS retention system offers a high level of security. The holster’s semi-hi-ride design aids in concealment and keeps the firearm close to the body.
One of the strengths of the 6287 is its balance between security and accessibility. The SLS hood is easy to disengage with practice. However, it provides a robust deterrent against unintentional or unauthorized removal of the firearm. A minor weakness is that the SLS system may require some initial training to master the release motion under stress.
The Safariland 6287 largely meets and exceeds expectations for a concealment holster focused on retention. It offers a level of security not commonly found in other concealment holsters without significantly sacrificing draw speed.
Design & Ergonomics
The Safariland 6287 features a durable and functional design. The holster is constructed from SafariSeven™ nylon blend, which is non-abrasive to the firearm’s finish. The semi-hi-ride position and slight forward cant enhance comfort and concealability.
The holster is user-friendly, although there is a slight learning curve associated with the SLS system. Once mastered, the draw stroke becomes smooth and consistent. The holster is comfortable to wear for extended periods.
Durability & Maintenance
The Safariland 6287 is built to last. The SafariSeven™ nylon blend is highly resistant to wear and tear. The holster is expected to provide years of reliable service with proper care.
Maintaining the 6287 is simple and requires minimal effort. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth and occasional lubrication of the SLS mechanism are sufficient to keep it in optimal condition.
