Let’s Dive into Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6287-141-131
The Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6287-141-131 is a specialized piece of gear from Safariland, renowned for its duty-grade holsters trusted by law enforcement. This particular model bridges the gap between open carry security and concealed carry comfort, utilizing the proven SLS (Self Locking System) retention in a more streamlined profile. It aims to provide a secure, yet easily accessible, method for carrying a sidearm concealed, a challenge many face balancing professional needs with everyday practicality.
I needed a holster that could accommodate my duty weapon, a Smith & Wesson 4006 TSW, while still offering a reasonable degree of concealment during off-duty assignments. The bulky nature of most duty holsters made blending in impossible; therefore I sought something that provided security without screaming “gun.” This led me to explore concealment-focused offerings from reputable brands like Safariland.
Upon receiving the Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6287-141-131, I immediately noticed its robust construction and relatively compact design. The STX Tactical Black finish felt durable and provided a low-profile appearance. It definitely seemed like a significant upgrade in terms of concealability compared to my Level III retention duty holster.
Compared to other concealment holsters I’ve used, like leather pancake holsters or minimalist Kydex options, the Safariland 6287 offered a tangible increase in weapon security thanks to its SLS system. While leather holsters can be comfortable, they lack active retention, and while Kydex holsters offer good retention, they rarely match the secure feeling of Safariland’s SLS. I picked this because of my trust in the Safariland name and its reputation for security and durability.
My first impression was optimistic. It appeared to be a well-made holster that struck a good balance between concealment, security, and accessibility, all critical features for my intended use.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6287-141-131 to the Test
First Use Experience
I initially tested the Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6287-141-131 at a local shooting range, focusing on drawing drills and re-holstering under time pressure. The range offered a controlled environment to evaluate the SLS system’s effectiveness and the holster’s overall ergonomics without the added stress of a real-world situation. The weather was dry and sunny, typical range conditions.
The SLS system took a bit of practice to master, but once I internalized the motion, drawing became smooth and relatively quick. Re-holstering was also secure and intuitive. However, I found that drawing in a seated position required more deliberate movement than standing.
After the first range session, I didn’t encounter any major issues, only the need for some practice to become proficient with the SLS release. It was a different draw stroke compared to my thumb-break duty holster, requiring a conscious effort to retrain my muscle memory.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the Safariland 6287 Concealment SLS Belt Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6287-141-131 has proven to be a reliable piece of gear. I’ve worn it during training courses, off-duty security details, and even while hiking, exposing it to varied conditions.
The STX Tactical finish has held up remarkably well, showing only minor scuff marks from regular wear and tear. The holster’s internal construction has retained its shape and retention capabilities without any noticeable degradation.
Maintenance is simple: a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dust and debris. The SLS mechanism benefits from occasional lubrication with a dry lubricant to ensure smooth operation. Compared to my previous leather holsters, the Safariland 6287 requires far less maintenance and retains its shape and function much better.
