Let’s Talk About Pachmayr 04420 Renegade Recoil Pad Slip-On Black Polymer Small
The Pachmayr 04420 Renegade Recoil Pad Slip-On Black Polymer Small is designed to provide extra comfort and recoil absorption to shooters. Pachmayr, a trusted name in firearm accessories, aims to offer an affordable and effective solution for reducing shoulder fatigue. This slip-on recoil pad promises easy installation and an extended length of pull, appealing to a wide range of shooters looking for enhanced comfort without permanent firearm modifications.
Years of shouldering different rifles and shotguns have taught me that recoil can make or break a shooting experience. Seeking a simple and cost-effective way to mitigate recoil on a vintage .22 rifle I inherited, I began my search. After considering screw-on pads that required gunsmithing, I opted for the Pachmayr Renegade for its promise of easy, slip-on installation.
The Pachmayr Renegade arrived in a simple, no-frills package. The initial impression was positive; the polymer felt dense and appeared well-molded. It seemed durable enough to withstand some abuse. The pad has a clean, modern look, which I appreciated.
Compared to other slip-on pads I’ve used, the Pachmayr seemed more substantial than cheaper, generic models. I also considered a Limbsaver slip-on, but the Pachmayr won out due to its lower price point and similar design. The Pachmayr also seemed a better fit for the smaller stock of the .22.
Initially, I was cautiously optimistic. The feel of the polymer and the ease of installation seemed promising. The true test, however, would be how it performed on the range.
Real-World Testing: Putting Pachmayr 04420 Renegade Recoil Pad Slip-On Black Polymer Small to the Test
First Use Experience
The first range trip involved attaching the Pachmayr Renegade to my vintage .22 rifle. Installation was straightforward; the pad slipped on snugly with minimal effort. I tested the rifle with various .22 LR loads, ranging from standard velocity to high velocity rounds.
Even with the relatively mild recoil of a .22, the Pachmayr offered a noticeable improvement in comfort. The pad effectively absorbed the small amount of kick, making extended shooting sessions more enjoyable. There were no slippage issues or movement of the pad during firing.
No real surprises occurred during the first use, only relief. The pad performed as advertised, providing added comfort without any complications. The added length of pull felt natural, improving my overall shooting posture.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Pachmayr Renegade has held up remarkably well. There are no signs of cracking or deformation in the polymer. The pad remains securely attached to the rifle stock.
Durability has proven to be a strong point. Despite being exposed to various weather conditions (including sun and rain), the polymer has retained its shape and texture. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth has been sufficient to maintain its appearance.
Compared to previous experiences with other recoil pads, the Pachmayr Renegade stands out for its ease of use and durability. Some cheaper pads tend to become brittle or lose their elasticity over time, but the Pachmayr shows no such issues. Its consistent performance and reliability have exceeded my initial expectations.
Breaking Down the Features of Pachmayr 04420 Renegade Recoil Pad Slip-On Black Polymer Small
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Pachmayr. They are a well-known and respected name in recoil reduction technology.
- Finish: Black. This provides a classic and unobtrusive aesthetic that blends well with most firearms.
- Fabric/Material: Polymer. This provides good shock absorption and durability at a low cost.
- Available Sizes: Small, Medium, Large. The small size is designed for smaller stocks often found on youth rifles or shotguns.
These specifications are significant because they define the pad’s purpose and limitations. The polymer construction balances cost and effectiveness, making it an accessible upgrade for most shooters. The availability of multiple sizes ensures a proper fit, crucial for optimal recoil absorption.
Performance & Functionality
The Pachmayr Renegade excels at reducing felt recoil, especially on smaller caliber rifles and shotguns. The polymer effectively absorbs the impact, minimizing shoulder fatigue. Its simple slip-on design makes installation and removal a breeze.
Its strength is definitely in recoil reduction for smaller calibers. For larger calibers like a 12 gauge, it might not be enough to reduce the recoil significantly. The fact that it is a slip-on can be seen as a weakness, as screw-on or professionally installed recoil pads offer more secure and permanent attachment.
The Pachmayr Renegade meets expectations for its intended purpose: providing a comfortable and affordable recoil reduction solution for smaller firearms. Its performance is consistent and reliable.
Design & Ergonomics
The Pachmayr Renegade features a simple and functional design. The black polymer is unobtrusive and provides a secure grip. The pad adds approximately 1 inch to the length of pull, improving ergonomics for some shooters.
The build quality is solid, especially considering the price point. The polymer feels dense and durable, not cheap or flimsy. The added length of pull may not be ideal for all shooters.
Durability & Maintenance
The Pachmayr Renegade’s polymer construction is designed for longevity. The pad is resistant to cracking, deformation, and weathering. With proper care, it should last for years.
Maintenance is minimal. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient to remove dirt and grime. No special cleaners or treatments are required.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Pachmayr Renegade is a self-contained unit and does not require any additional accessories. Customization options are limited, as it is a slip-on pad designed for easy installation. Pachmayr offers the Renegade in different sizes and colors (black and brown) to suit various firearms and preferences.
Due to its slip-on design, it isn’t really compatible with things like adjustable cheek risers. Shooters seeking more advanced recoil reduction systems or adjustable features will need to explore alternative solutions.
