I was looking for a fun and safe way to improve my speed and accuracy with my .22LR rifle. Static paper targets are great for zeroing, but I wanted something more engaging that would also allow me to practice transitions and target acquisition. I stumbled upon the Birchwood Casey dueling tree while browsing for reactive targets and was immediately drawn to its simplicity and potential for competitive shooting.
Unboxing the Birchwood Casey 47424 World Of Targets Dueling Tree 22 Rimfire Target 30.5″ X 1 was straightforward. The target comes in a relatively compact package, with the main post and target paddles neatly organized. The steel felt substantial and well-coated, suggesting a durable build.
I considered other reactive targets like self-resetting spinners and knockdown targets, but I chose the dueling tree for its simplicity and the ability to compete with a friend. Other similar products felt more flimsy or required more setup. The Birchwood Casey dueling tree seemed like the best balance of durability, portability, and interactive fun.

Real-World Testing: Putting Birchwood Casey 47424 World Of Targets Dueling Tree 22 Rimfire Target 30.5″ X 1 to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Birchwood Casey 47424 World Of Targets Dueling Tree 22 Rimfire Target 30.5″ X 1 at my local outdoor shooting range. I set it up at 25 yards, a comfortable distance for .22LR accuracy testing. The setup required no tools; the paddles simply slide onto the main post.
The target performed admirably in dry conditions. Each hit registered with a satisfying clang, and the paddles swung smoothly from one side to the other. The simplicity of the design made it very easy to use; even my less experienced shooting buddy picked it up quickly.
There were no significant issues after the first use, but I did notice that the orange paint chipped slightly where the pellets impacted the steel. This was purely cosmetic and expected, but I knew it would need eventual repainting.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Birchwood Casey 47424 World Of Targets Dueling Tree 22 Rimfire Target 30.5″ X 1 is still holding up well. The steel shows no signs of warping or significant damage, despite hundreds of .22 rounds impacting it. The paint has worn off in several areas, revealing the bare steel, but this doesn’t affect its functionality.
Durability is excellent for a .22 rimfire target. The 3/8″ steel construction is clearly sufficient to withstand repeated impacts without bending or breaking. I have noticed a slight buildup of lead on the target paddles.
Maintenance is simple; I occasionally wipe down the target with a cloth to remove loose lead and dirt. Repainting the paddles with high-visibility paint will eventually be necessary to maintain their visibility. Compared to static paper targets, the dueling tree offers far more engaging and reusable target practice.
