Let’s Dive into MTC Optics Viper Connect SL 3-12×24 Rifle Scope
The MTC Optics Viper Connect SL 3-12×24 Rifle Scope isn’t just another optic; it’s a specialized tool designed for a specific purpose. Manufactured by MTC Optics, this scope distinguishes itself with its short eye relief, exceptionally wide field of view, and compact design. Its intended use with PCP air rifles and .22LR firearms immediately piqued my interest, as I’ve been searching for an optic to perfectly match my custom-built air rifle for backyard pest control and some light target practice.
I needed a scope that wouldn’t break the bank but still offered clarity and precision at shorter ranges. Standard scopes often have parallax issues at distances under 25 yards, making accurate shots challenging. I was also looking for something lightweight to avoid making the already hefty air rifle too cumbersome.
Upon unboxing, the Viper Connect SL felt solid and well-constructed, despite its relatively light weight of 600g. The satin finish gives it a sleek, understated look, and the adjustment turrets feel precise and tactile. It immediately felt like a step up from the generic air rifle scopes I’ve used in the past.
I considered the Hawke Airmax 30 WA SF 3-12×50 and the Vector Optics Veyron 3-12×44, but the Viper Connect SL stood out due to its unique short eye relief design. This promised a wider field of view, which is crucial for quickly acquiring targets in my backyard, where squirrels and rabbits are constantly on the move. Ultimately, the promise of a wider field of view and the smaller objective lens for better clearance sold me on this MTC Optics offering.
My initial excitement was tempered with a bit of apprehension about the short eye relief. I’ve never used a scope that requires such close proximity to the eye, and I wondered if it would be uncomfortable or difficult to adjust to. Overall, my first impression was positive and hopeful that the MTC Optics Viper Connect SL 3-12×24 Rifle Scope would fill the niche I needed.
Real-World Testing: Putting MTC Optics Viper Connect SL 3-12×24 Rifle Scope to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing took place in my backyard, a semi-urban environment with varying light conditions and target distances ranging from 10 to 50 yards. I mounted the Viper Connect SL on my PCP air rifle, using high-profile 30mm scope rings to achieve the correct eye alignment. Aligning the eye relief correctly took some time to set up, however the clarity was immediately noticeable.
The scope performed admirably in both bright sunlight and overcast conditions. The adjustable parallax, ranging from 10 yards to infinity, proved invaluable for achieving a clear image at various distances. The wide field of view truly lived up to the hype, making it easier to track moving targets.
The short eye relief took some getting used to, and required consistent cheek weld to avoid scope shadow. However, once I found the optimal position, the view was immersive and comfortable. There were no major issues during the initial testing, though I did notice the reticle illumination was almost too bright, even on the lowest setting, during dusk.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the MTC Optics Viper Connect SL 3-12×24 Rifle Scope continues to perform reliably. It has endured several light rain showers without any noticeable fogging or water damage, a testament to its waterproof construction. The turrets maintained their zero, even after repeated adjustments for different target distances.
I haven’t observed any significant signs of wear and tear, despite frequent handling and transportation. The satin finish is surprisingly resistant to scratches and fingerprints. Cleaning the lenses is straightforward, requiring only a microfiber cloth to remove dust and smudges.
Compared to previous scopes I’ve used, the Viper Connect SL offers a superior field of view and parallax adjustment, which translates to improved accuracy and faster target acquisition. It has exceeded my expectations in terms of optical clarity and overall performance for its intended purpose. The short eye relief is still a bit unusual but is now second nature.
