The Bark River Bravo 2 Green Canvas CPM S35VN Fixed Blade Knife is a robust tool designed for serious outdoor use. Crafted by Bark River, a name synonymous with quality and durability, this knife boasts a 7-inch blade of CPM S35VN steel and a comfortable green canvas Micarta handle. It’s a full-tang knife meant for hard work.
For years, I’ve relied on a variety of fixed blade knives for everything from processing game to prepping firewood. I was searching for a knife that could handle the rigors of extended wilderness trips while maintaining a sharp edge and comfortable grip. The reputation of Bark River knives for their exceptional craftsmanship and edge retention drew me to the Bravo 2.
Unboxing the Bravo 2 was a satisfying experience. The heft of the knife immediately communicated its solid construction, and the green canvas Micarta handle felt secure and comfortable in my hand. The brown leather sheath was also well-made and functional.
I considered the ESEE 6 and the Fallkniven A1, both excellent knives in their own right. However, the CPM S35VN steel of the Bark River promised superior edge retention, and the handle ergonomics seemed more suited to my hand. I chose the Bravo 2 for its blend of strength, steel quality, and comfortable design.
My initial impression was one of excitement. This wasn’t just a knife; it was a well-crafted tool built to withstand years of hard use. I looked forward to putting it through its paces.
Real-World Testing: Putting Bark River Bravo 2 Green Canvas CPM S35VN Fixed Blade Knife to the Test
First Use Experience
My first test of the Bravo 2 was on a backcountry camping trip in the Appalachian Mountains. I used it for various tasks, including batoning firewood, preparing food, and carving feather sticks for fire starting. The knife performed exceptionally well in all these areas, with the blade easily splitting wood and the handle providing a secure grip even when wet.
The Bravo 2 excelled in wet conditions. Rain was prevalent throughout the trip, and the Micarta handle never felt slippery or insecure. There were no issues after first-time use.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Bravo 2 has proven to be an incredibly reliable tool. I’ve used it on multiple camping trips, hunting excursions, and even for some heavy-duty yard work. The edge retention of the CPM S35VN steel is remarkable; I’ve only had to touch it up a few times with a strop.
There are minimal signs of wear and tear. The blade has a few minor scratches, but the edge remains sharp and free of chips. The Micarta handle still looks and feels new.
Maintenance is simple. I typically clean the blade with a damp cloth after use and occasionally apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust. The leather sheath requires occasional conditioning to keep it supple.
In comparison to my previous knives, the Bravo 2 outperforms them in edge retention and overall durability. It’s become my go-to fixed blade for any outdoor adventure.
