Let’s Talk About Berkley FFMN5D-SLMS Flicker Minnow 5cm 1373166
The Berkley FFMN5D-SLMS Flicker Minnow 5cm 1373166 is a compact, minnow-profile lure designed to trigger strikes from a variety of gamefish, particularly when trolling. Manufactured by Berkley, this lure is part of their proven Flicker series, known for its effective action and diving capabilities. This specific model boasts a “Slick Mouse” color pattern, two Fusion19 hooks, and a design that mimics a fleeing baitfish.
For years, I’ve relied on larger crankbaits for trolling walleye, but I needed something smaller and more subtle for pressured waters where the fish are finicky. The Flicker Minnow’s reputation for attracting strikes even when other lures fail piqued my interest. My initial thought was to find a more subtle presentation for targeting pressured walleye in clear water.
Upon opening the plastic clam-shell packaging, the Flicker Minnow immediately impressed me with its lifelike appearance. The “Slick Mouse” color, a blend of browns and silvers, is remarkably realistic and suggests a natural prey item. The lure felt solid and well-constructed, despite its small size, and the Fusion19 hooks looked incredibly sharp.
I compared it to a Rapala Original Floating Minnow and a Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow, both proven performers in my tackle box. The Berkley offering was significantly smaller than the Rapala, making it ideal for targeting smaller species or when a subtle presentation is required. The Yo-Zuri had a similar size but lacked the specific diving capabilities and erratic action of the Flicker Minnow.
My first impression was overwhelmingly positive. The lure’s size, color, and construction all suggested it would be a valuable addition to my arsenal. I was eager to get it on the water and see how it performed.
Real-World Testing: Putting Berkley FFMN5D-SLMS Flicker Minnow 5cm 1373166 to the Test
First Use Experience
My first opportunity to test the Berkley FFMN5D-SLMS Flicker Minnow 5cm 1373166 was on a local lake known for its heavily pressured walleye population. I trolled it behind my kayak at various speeds and depths to gauge its action and effectiveness. The conditions were partly cloudy with a slight chop on the water.
The Flicker Minnow tracked straight and true, even at higher trolling speeds, exhibiting an enticing wobble and flash. Its diving depth was impressive for its size, reaching approximately 5 feet without any additional weight. I appreciated the ease of use; simply tie it on and start trolling.
Initially, I didn’t experience immediate success, but after adjusting my trolling speed and depth, I finally hooked into a decent-sized walleye. The Fusion19 hooks provided a solid hookset, and the lure held up well to the fight. The only minor issue I encountered was a slight tendency for the lure to foul on weeds in heavily vegetated areas, requiring occasional clearing.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the Berkley FFMN5D-SLMS Flicker Minnow 5cm 1373166 has become a reliable performer in my tackle box. It has proven effective on walleye, bass, and even the occasional trout. Despite repeated use, the lure’s finish has held up remarkably well, showing only minimal signs of wear and tear.
The Fusion19 hooks remain sharp and strong, maintaining their hooking power. The lure is easy to clean; a simple rinse with fresh water after each use is sufficient to keep it in good condition. Compared to other small crankbaits I’ve used in the past, the Flicker Minnow outperforms them in terms of durability, action, and overall fish-catching ability.
The realistic color pattern combined with the enticing wobble has consistently triggered strikes when other lures failed. It has definitely become a staple in my walleye arsenal.
