Caldwell, known for its affordable and functional shooting accessories, aims to provide a reliable bipod without breaking the bank. It boasts quick-deployment legs, twist-lock height adjustment, and M-LOK/KeyMod compatibility.
I often find myself shooting in uneven terrain while hunting coyotes and groundhogs. Achieving a stable shooting platform is crucial for accurate shots in these scenarios. I needed a lightweight, easily adjustable bipod that could quickly attach to my AR-15’s M-LOK handguard.
Upon unboxing, the Caldwell XLA M-LOK KeyMod Bipod 9-13in felt surprisingly sturdy for its weight. The aluminum construction appeared solid, and the rubber feet seemed like they would provide good grip. The quick-deployment buttons operated smoothly, and the twist-lock mechanism felt secure.
I considered the Magpul Bipod and the Harris S-BRM bipod, both popular choices in the market. Ultimately, I chose the Caldwell XLA M-LOK KeyMod Bipod 9-13in due to its lower price point and M-LOK compatibility without needing an adapter. The streamlined design was also a plus.
My first impression was positive; the bipod seemed well-made and ready for action. I was eager to test its performance in the field and see if it lived up to its promises of stability and ease of use.
Real-World Testing: Putting Caldwell XLA M-LOK KeyMod Bipod 9-13in to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Caldwell XLA M-LOK KeyMod Bipod 9-13in at my local shooting range, practicing prone shooting with my AR-15. The weather was dry and sunny, providing ideal conditions for testing the bipod’s stability. The bipod performed well, providing a solid and stable platform for sighting in my rifle.
While shooting, I also tested the bipod on a coyote hunting trip in early spring. The ground was damp, and there were some muddy patches. The bipod’s rubber feet provided sufficient grip, even on the softer terrain, allowing for steady shots.
The bipod was easy to use right out of the box. The quick-deployment legs extended smoothly with the push of a button, and the twist-lock mechanism allowed for precise height adjustments. It took only a few minutes to get used to its operation.
One minor issue arose: when deploying the legs quickly, one of them occasionally stuck slightly. A quick flick usually resolved the issue, but it was a small inconvenience.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Caldwell XLA M-LOK KeyMod Bipod 9-13in has held up reasonably well. There are some minor scratches on the aluminum legs, but no significant signs of wear and tear. The rubber feet still provide good grip, and the deployment mechanism continues to function.
The bipod has proven to be fairly durable, considering its lightweight construction and price point. It has withstood the bumps and scrapes of several hunting trips. I do take care to wipe it down after each use.
Cleaning the bipod is straightforward; a quick wipe with a damp cloth is usually sufficient. I occasionally apply a light coat of lubricant to the leg deployment mechanism to ensure smooth operation. This bipod is easy to maintain and care for.
Compared to other bipods I’ve used in the past, the Caldwell XLA M-LOK KeyMod Bipod 9-13in offers a good balance of lightweight design and reasonable stability. It doesn’t quite match the rock-solid feel of higher-end bipods, but it is an outstanding improvement over shooting without any support.
