The Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Kimber 84M Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Stock offers a blend of traditional aesthetics and functional design for the Kimber 84M rifle. Manufactured by Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks, it aims to provide a classically themed stock that replaces the original factory stock, catering to shooting sports enthusiasts who appreciate a touch of elegance and improved ergonomics. With its arched comb and classic scroll engraving, this stock promises to enhance the look and feel of the Kimber rifle.
My journey to this particular stock began with a desire to restore an older Kimber 84M that had seen better days. The original synthetic stock, while functional, lacked the warmth and character I craved, and I wanted something that honored the rifle’s legacy. I was specifically looking for a hardwood stock with a classic design and a seamless fit.
Upon unboxing the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Kimber 84M Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Stock, I was immediately struck by the richness of the walnut finish and the smooth, clean lines. The weight felt substantial and balanced, suggesting a solid build, and the scroll engraving added a touch of sophistication that I appreciated. The build quality appeared excellent, with no visible imperfections or rough edges.
I considered other options like stocks from McMillan and Manners, known for their high-performance synthetic offerings, but they didn’t offer the classic aesthetic I was after. There were also some laminate options from other manufacturers, but the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks stock seemed to strike the best balance of tradition, quality, and price. I chose this particular product due to its classic aesthetic, positive reviews regarding fit and finish, and the brand’s reputation for producing quality hardwood stocks.
My first impression was definitely excitement. The stock appeared to be exactly what I was looking for, a quality replacement that would breathe new life into my trusted Kimber 84M, enhancing both its functionality and its aesthetic appeal. I was eager to get it mounted and see how it performed in the field.
Real-World Testing: Putting Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Kimber 84M Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Stock to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Kimber 84M Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Stock at my local shooting range and during a whitetail deer hunt in the Appalachian foothills of Pennsylvania. The range session allowed me to assess the fit and feel of the stock, while the hunt provided a real-world scenario to evaluate its performance in varied weather conditions.
The stock performed admirably in both dry and damp conditions encountered during the hunt. The walnut finish provided a secure grip even with slightly wet hands, and the stock remained stable and unaffected by temperature fluctuations. There was no noticeable change in point of impact due to temperature changes.
The Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Kimber 84M Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Stock required minimal adjustment. The factory barrel channel was precisely cut, ensuring a free-floating barrel, and the action bedded nicely with just a little Acraglas bedding compound. After proper bedding, the rifle’s balance was improved, and the slightly higher comb provided a more comfortable cheek weld for optimal scope alignment.
After the initial range session, I noticed a slight amount of movement in the action, which was quickly remedied with the bedding compound. Once properly bedded, the rifle performed flawlessly.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use and numerous trips to the range and field, the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Kimber 84M Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Stock has proven to be a reliable and durable upgrade. The stock has held up well to the rigors of hunting, showing no signs of cracking or warping.
Minor surface scratches are visible from normal use, but the overall finish remains intact and attractive. The laminate hardwood construction has proven to be highly resistant to impacts and moisture.
Maintaining the stock is simple; a quick wipe-down with a slightly damp cloth after each use keeps it clean. I occasionally apply a thin coat of gunstock wax to protect the finish and enhance the wood’s natural luster. The Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Classic Kimber 84M Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Stock has definitely outperformed the original synthetic stock in terms of feel, aesthetics, and overall durability.
