Safariland 6390 LVL1 Retention Springfield Armory XDM Holster Review

Let’s Dive into Safariland 6390 LVL1 Retention Springfield Armory XDM Holster

The Safariland 6390 LVL1 Retention Springfield Armory XDM Holster represents a significant step in duty holster technology, blending speed, security, and durability. This holster is designed specifically for the Springfield Armory XDM, ensuring a snug and secure fit while providing rapid access when needed.

I was searching for a duty holster that offered both excellent weapon retention and a smooth, fast draw. My previous holster lacked the confident security I needed for active duty scenarios, where the risk of weapon disarming is a constant concern.

Upon unboxing, the Safariland 6390 LVL1 Retention Springfield Armory XDM Holster immediately impressed me with its robust construction and quality materials. The SafariLaminate thermoformed body felt incredibly durable, and the suede lining provided a reassuring level of protection for the XDM’s finish.

Compared to my older Blackhawk Serpa, the Safariland offers a much more refined and secure retention system. Unlike the noisy, clicky release of some cheaper holsters, the Safariland’s ALS (Automatic Locking System) felt smooth and intuitive. I also considered the Safariland 7378RDS, but ultimately opted for the 6390 for its streamlined design and enhanced concealability under a jacket.

My first impression was overwhelmingly positive. I felt a surge of confidence knowing that my XDM was securely holstered, yet readily accessible when the situation demanded it.

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6390 LVL1 Retention Springfield Armory XDM Holster to the Test

First Use Experience

I initially tested the Safariland 6390 LVL1 Retention Springfield Armory XDM Holster at the shooting range during a force-on-force training exercise. The simulated scenarios involved rapid movement, grappling, and close-quarters engagements.

The holster performed admirably in all conditions. Even with sweat and grime accumulating during the drills, the draw stroke remained consistently smooth and reliable.

It took me a few practice draws to fully internalize the ALS release mechanism, but once I did, it became second nature. The high-ride design kept the weapon close to my body, minimizing printing and maximizing comfort.

After the initial session, I noticed a slight amount of wear on the inner suede lining, but this was expected with repeated draws. Otherwise, the holster showed no signs of malfunction or degradation.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of consistent use in various training exercises and on-duty applications, the Safariland 6390 LVL1 Retention Springfield Armory XDM Holster continues to impress. Its durability is outstanding, with no significant wear and tear despite rigorous use.

Cleaning and maintaining the holster is straightforward. A simple wipe-down with a damp cloth and occasional application of silicone lubricant to the ALS mechanism keeps everything running smoothly.

Compared to my previous holster, the Safariland 6390 provides a much more secure and reliable platform. The Level 1 retention gives me peace of mind knowing that my weapon is safe from unauthorized access, while still allowing for a rapid draw when necessary.
