The Nikko Stirling Mountmaster NMC41240W Rifle Scope 4-12x40mm, 4-Plex Reticle w/ Rings enters the market as an affordable optic solution, promising enhanced shooting capabilities without breaking the bank. It also comes packaged with mounting rings, streamlining the setup process for immediate use.
I’ve spent years tinkering with high-end optics, but I was looking for a reliable, budget-friendly scope to outfit a dedicated .22LR rifle for small game hunting and plinking. The promise of decent performance without a hefty price tag drew me to the Mountmaster. I wanted something that could withstand the occasional bump and still hold zero, all while offering enough magnification for accurate shots out to 100 yards.
Upon unboxing, the scope felt surprisingly solid for its price point. The matte black finish was clean, and the adjustments turrets rotated with a satisfying click. I was pleased that Nikko Stirling included the mounting rings, a welcome addition for a complete out-of-the-box solution.
Compared to similar budget scopes like the Bushnell Banner or Simmons Whitetail Classic, the Nikko Stirling Mountmaster seemed to offer a slightly clearer image at higher magnifications. While the Bushnell and Simmons might have a slight edge in brand recognition, the Mountmaster’s included rings and positive turret adjustments swayed my decision. My initial impression was optimistic; it seemed like a solid scope that could deliver on its promises.
Real-World Testing: Putting Nikko Stirling Mountmaster NMC41240W Rifle Scope 4-12x40mm, 4-Plex Reticle w/ Rings to the Test
First Use Experience
I mounted the Nikko Stirling Mountmaster on my Ruger 10/22 and headed to my local outdoor range. The weather was mild, with a slight breeze, providing ideal conditions for sighting in the scope at 50 yards. I was able to quickly zero the scope with minimal adjustments.
The 4-Plex reticle was easy to see against the target, and the image clarity, while not exceptional, was certainly adequate for target shooting. After about 50 rounds, I noticed the scope held zero consistently, a testament to its build quality.

After several months of regular use, the Mountmaster has proven to be a reliable companion on my .22LR. Despite a few minor bumps and scrapes during transport, the scope has held up well. It still maintains its zero after countless range sessions.
Cleaning the lenses is simple, and the matte finish resists scratches and fingerprints. Compared to some of my higher-end scopes, the Mountmaster requires significantly less maintenance, making it ideal for casual shooters.
