Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide Holster Review

Let’s Dive into Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide Holster

The Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide Holster is a concealment-focused holster designed for both plainclothes officers and responsible concealed carriers. This holster distinguishes itself with the Safariland Automatic Locking System (ALS), providing a secure Level I Retention without sacrificing speed and ease of draw. This blend of security and accessibility is a crucial balance that many holsters struggle to achieve.

I was seeking a holster that could be quickly donned and doffed, adapting to both range training and potential concealed carry scenarios. I needed something reliable, with positive retention, that wouldn’t require a complete re-rig of my belt every time I switched applications.

My first impression was positive, noting the robust SafariLaminate construction and the smooth suede lining. The holster felt substantial, instilling confidence in its durability, while the suede lining hinted at a gun-friendly interior. Compared to cheaper, injection-molded polymer holsters, the Safariland felt like a step up in quality and construction. I chose this over a simple friction-fit holster because of the added security of the ALS system and the versatility of paddle and belt slide options.

I was excited to test out the ALS system and see how it performed under pressure. Would it be as intuitive as advertised, or would it hinder a smooth, rapid draw?

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide Holster to the Test

First Use Experience

My initial testing ground was a local shooting range, where I practiced drawing and re-holstering drills. The holster was subjected to rapid draws, re-holstering under simulated stress, and movement drills to test retention. I also tested it during an outdoor training session that involved light rain and moderate temperatures.

The ALS system proved remarkably intuitive, requiring only a thumb swipe to deactivate the lock during the draw stroke. In wet conditions, the textured paddle and belt slide provided a secure grip, preventing slippage. It only took a few repetitions to become proficient with the draw stroke. There were no initial issues, and the draw felt natural.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of consistent use, the Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide Holster continues to perform admirably. The SafariLaminate material shows no signs of cracking or deformation. The suede lining remains intact and protects the firearm’s finish.

Regular cleaning involves wiping down the exterior with a damp cloth and occasionally brushing the suede lining to remove any accumulated debris. The holster has surpassed my expectations in terms of durability and ease of maintenance. Compared to cheaper, adjustable polymer holsters, the Safariland holds its shape better and the retention remains consistent.
