The Ruger Mini 14 with the its tight twist will shoot 55 grain but not nearly so accurately as 68 grain. IMHO - I would never shoot any steel cased ammo in a Ruger or a Colt.

Phil When my mini-14 was new I shot alot of Wolf and also Barnaul, Silver Bear & Brown Bear (also made in Russia). It shoots fine and is good for plinking. Later I started getting into more long range shooting & deer hunting. I had my mini accurized incl. a match grade barrel, bedding, trigger job etc. now the russian stuff doesn't shoot well enough for my needs.

On a side note; Ruger does NOT recommend using steel cased ammo in mini-14's, (I don't know why) they use Black Hills brass cased ammo in their testing. I shot over 5,000 rounds of russian ammo in my mini before having the work done & never had a single problem of any kind! Enjoy your new mini! Bruce

I'm new to the mini myself, but what I heard is the Russian ammo has some kind of lacquer coating that tends to gum up the action and sometimes the firing pin even breaks. Just what I heard, maybe a more experienced user can confirm.

While I've never used their 5.56mm, I have used their 7.62x39mm steel case - and it's fine for such use.

For the mini 14 almost anything that fires will be good enough. The basic rifle is not that accurate.

Avoid Wolf ammo like the plague. First, it is unreliable, with many misfires and jams even in guns in good condition. Second, they are made with steel cases, which have a tendancy to more rapidly degrade the gun's extractor. Third, the ammo is very poorly made, and has been known to have pressures so great to actually destroy a gun. It is not worth the few bucks you save on the ammo.

I actually traded in my Wolf .223 ammo for a bundle of Lake City ammo. The Wolf ammo jammed 90% of the time in both of my AR-15's...of course, the Mini-14 is a different beast. Probably has looser tolerances. The Mini-14 that I had years ago always shot brass ammo.

But try it out with the -14 and let us know!

I just tried to put wolf through my brand new Mini 14 and not one of the first 20 rounds would cycle without me having to pull the bolt. It was like the case was expanding or their wasn't enough back pressure on the bolt to make it cycle.

I had the EXACT same experience. First 20 rounds I ever shot out of my new mini 14 and I had to pull the action back after each shot. It's got me thinking that I should have oiled this gun before firing it or something! There's even an empty case stuck in the gun as the gun jammed after the 20th round.

You will be fine using either the old or new Wolf in your Mini. I use it all the time. Shhot with confidence.
