I just got a Winchester Model 94 in 44 magnum at the local Wally world. We wont even go in to how long the background 'instant check' took...anyway...

got it home, did things around the house cleaning, etc to keep peace with the Misses... when I finally got to looking at the gun, it seems to me that the lever is pretty loose, is that normal?

There is a little sway side to side (with the lever closed) as well as a large amount of jiggle potential regardless of whether action is opened or closed.

I never had a lever action before, and I dont know what to think about this looseness. Is it possible a gunsmith could tighten it up? Should it be loose or what?

I'm not a 'smith and I do not own a '94 (or any other kind of lever action), however it seems to me '94s are inherently 'loose' in the lever. I handled a '94 many years ago (handled, not shot) and the lever was loose in that one too. Off hand (with absolutely nothing to cite as an authority), I'd say some looseness is normal and is just one of those things. How much looseness is the real question. If you are really bothered about this, you might try going to a local gunshop and inspecting other '94s to see how loose they are in comparison. Alternatively take the rifle with you and have it inspected and, if necessary, tightened up.

Well, I know that people always complement the Browning BLR as being tight so there must be something out there that is loose. Definitely find a gunstore or two and handle a few other 94's. If they are all loose then that probably is normal. I don't know what people expected back in 1894. Maybe that design was like rocket science for the time?
