What is the quality of the Winchester Model 70s that were produced after 1964??? I recently acquired one of these so called "later" models and it has excessive tooling marks on the "Bolt" the action is smooth but I'm disturbed by how much of a clean up job it can use. it has the claw extractor and the 3 position safety of the pre 64' models, but, I keep reading that they are considerably less valuable than the pre 64 model, what is the actual difference that would drive the value so far apart?

the pre 64 models are made in different material thus being more exspensive what the model 64 doesnt have is the new M.O.A. trigger system which is a smoother feel because when the trigger moves rearward it only travels half the distance of the actuator since this distance is greatly decreased the perception of trigger creep and overtravel movment are virtually eliminated and the newer mod 70's have improved controlled round feeding they also have new hex socket action screws and a new and improved one piece triggerguard and hinged magazine floorplate all made by new and less exspensive materials making it cheaper than the 64 mod 70's so message me if this helped if not ask me anything you need to know i specialize in all firearms

hello ,,as xline mentioned there are some features that pre 64 model 70s had that post models don't,,sears used the j.c.higgins trademark from 1946-1962 so if it's marked this way it would be pre 64,,if it's a ted williams model it would have been made from 64 untill sears got outa the rifle sales and i would say proably post 64,,as for the year made thats a tough one ..i'm not sure if being a winchester but sold by sears it would be included in winchesters serial number data base,,one thing to look for as inlineknight mentioned is the bolt,,if it has a mauser style long extractor it could be a pre 64 model.. if the bolt has a small short extractor then it's most proably a post 64 model 70..
