Knowing nothing about rifles I just purchased a Winchester Model 70 220 Swift for my husband. The serial number is 253434. It has a thumb hole stock made of Maple Tiger's Eye. Can you give me a suggested value so I can know if I got a good deal or not. I'm told it hasen't been shot in 30 years and appears in wonderful shape.

your winchester was made in 1953 and if it was in the original stock would proably have a value of 1000-1700 depending on the condition.. but being someone has restocked it it would drop the value to a collector to proably around 600-700,,an original stock may be a hard item to find for it and i'd estimate the stock would cost around 200-250+ for an original md 70 pre 64 stock,,i'm sure the rifle is very nice with the thumbhole stock but it doesn't increase the value it would decrease the value in a collectors eyes..but still a nice item to get as a gift..a dealer would proably pay around 400-450 for it the way it is ..
